Recent interview with Oscar-winning actress Lee Grant (wiki) from late September.

Confirms she was born in 1925 (not the later years that are thrown around elsewhere online). After she tells the interviewer this and he doesn't react she responds with "Wait a minute, you’re supposed to react to that, kid! You’re supposed to say ‘What?! You’re kidding!’ Do your part. You’re supposed to react to that."

Sounds quite sharp. A future centenarian?

Just did some research on this.

I believe her death means that Lee Grant (wiki), 98, is the last survivor of the Hollywood Blacklist.

Lee Grant features prominently in the Netflix series 'Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War'.  She's in the second episode and discusses the McCarthy trials of Hollywood actors and actresses and its impact on her career and her blacklisting.

She's well spoken, sharp and animated.  If I didn't know about her age, it would be hard to believe this was someone in their late 90s.

The series was released in March 2024.  It was clearly filmed earlier as Daniel Ellsberg is in both the second and third episodes, with the third one acknowledging his death in June 2023 the credits.  I suspect his parts were filmed prior to diagnosis and disclosure of his illness (pancreatic cancer), making it late 2022 or early 2023.  Possibly Lee Grant's parts will filmed around this time.

  2. Esther Ranzen has been forced to pull out of a Westminster debate on assisted dying because she is too ill.  She was planning to attend the debate on Monday.

Dame Esther Rantzen sends message to MPs after pulling out of assisted dying debate

No new information, second time in a month that she's not appeared at an event (see post above by @RadGuy).

    From the article:

In a statement Dame Esther said: "While, sadly, my health issues (I have stage four lung cancer) prevent me from attending it myself, I will be watching the debate closely as it affects my own decision to go to Dignitas in Zurich if necessary, to protect my family from witnessing a painful death."

Which leaves Carl Cannon (if he is still alive, which I'm not 100% convinced of) as the only person definitively known to have competed at the first World Series of Poker still living (the first WSOP is very poorly recorded, some say it was just a seven-man table game, some say it was a mini-tournament of 30 people).

This picture clearly shows more than 7 people - and it has a 'who is who' guide too!  I can't make it out - can anyone make it legible?  Based on his age of 32 in 1970 and the picture from the FindAGrave, I suspect he is the man on the far left, between a short man with a cigar and 'Amarillo Slim' Preston in his trademark white hat.  The picture is from this website in Spanish.

I *think* he's dead but not 100% certain. I can find only a few mentions of him in the newspaper archives from the 1970s until 1984 then any mention of him suddenly stops. The only other details that these articles give are that he was from Houston, Texas and was a law graduate.

FindAGrave page here for a Carl Allen Cannon, born 16 Apr 1938 in Mexia, Texas and died 12 Dec 1984 in Houston, Texas. Is this our man? Associated family trees confirm that he lived in Houston, and mention he died from a heart attack. They say nothing about poker nor do they mention a degree. My hunch is it's him but I have no further proof.

I've checked records on cash winning for various WSOP touraments and he's last in the money in 1982 in 9th place.   Here WSOP , a notable WSOP records page Home (which also lists 38 players for 1970!) .  Also a newspaper archive, likely that @Ulitzer95 has seen that mentions his finish in May 1982, won by Jack Strauss; also gives residence as Houston, Texas.

Only other date to add was the day of his 9th place finish given as 22 May 1982.

@Ulitzer95 - I'd bet good money that you've made the correct call above.  No way would a player reputed to be one of the best, hence his 1970 invite, suddenly stop attending the highlight tourament of the year.

Sorry @Salmon Mousse, it seems the FOMO called your bluff.

I recall seeing that 'Poker Hall of Fame' team on the DDP.  A full 20 uniques!  Has that ever been replicated?

Going to be a nightmare finding news of the deaths of ... Donald Pelmear

Due to his connection to classic Doctor Who (The Time Warrior as Prof Rubeish), I would imagine that Donald Pelmear's death will be reported by the likes of Toby Hadoke and the associated fandom.

Damn, I thought I had posted it here, but yes, that was my hunch, bladder cancer, and more than stage 1.

There were some pictures in People magazine, he's gotten noticably thinner. They're putting him through the ringer. It's probably stage 3.

The treatment has been going on far too long for something minor.

    That's what they say.

I don't know, I look at this picture and think it's not that easy. But I do believe that it's not stage 4. And with his access to healthcare he should still be more likely than not to live for 5 more years (I think it's a 60-40 bet).

Britain's King Charles III (R) welcomes Commonwealth Secretary General, Baroness Scotland of Asthal Patricia Scotland

The weight loss is very noticable.  Compare the picture below from the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in June 2022.  He looked svelte compared to Boris Johnson!

  8. @time In no way was I complaining about the speed of updates!  I appreciate the work you and the Committee put in.

Your reply did make me burst out laughing, so I thank you for that too.

  9. It is 1 March, and the 61st day of 2024.  There have been 63 total (62 on the DDP + Paolo Taviani).  Taking the average yearly hit rate of ~0.75 (2020, 2021, 2022; 2023 is an outlier at ~0.84) multipled by remaining days in 2024 (305) and the hits already gives

    = 63 + 0.75 x 305

    = 63 + ~229

    = 292

That seems to place DDP 2024 on for a record year, right?  It is likely too early to tell (I last started estimating in July 2023) as we've yet to experience the May doldrums, which 2023 avoided.  What can be said is that it is certainly going to be an average year (see table).

Year Hits at end Feb Total
    2020 59 278
    2021 67 275
    2022 64 280
    2023 59 312

  10. Dear Committee,

I wandered over to check on how many had Keith as a pick and saw the new layout to the Drop 40. The added column giving the picks the previous rank or new appearance appeals the attention to the minutiae of the contest.

Kudos to whoever thought to add this.

  11. For those who like to do form spotting, the London Comic Con Spring, 2-3 March, has many film and television notables revelant to this thread.

    https://www.londoncomicconspring.com/

Doctor Who (2005 - present): Billie Piper, Julian Bleach

Doctor Who (1963-1989): Julian Glover, Frazer Hines, Colin Baker, Bonnie Langford (@YoungWillz), Sylvester McCoy

There are 16 actors total that are listed with both eras of Doctor Who.

Worth noting that Hines did not appear at a previous event a few years ago, having pulled out due to an illness (never specified).

  12. My one attempt to get a Unique pick has failed:

    https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2024/celebs_S.html#schullr024

Rebecca Schull (dob 22/02/1929) actress best known as Fay Cochran on 'Wings', was picked by two other teams.

She's never appeared in the DDP before and I deliberately never mentioned on posted my picks here even after the submission deadline or anywhere on the forum.  I'd had her in mind as a pick since 2022, when her much younger co-star Farrah Forke died of cancer and did garner a QO.

My other potential Unique, Denys Graham, as mentioned in the DDP Salvage thread, wouldn't have a happened either - picked by two teams.

    https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2024/celebs_G.html#grahamd024

Note that one team that thwarted the Schull pick also has Graham.  At least I can say that if a veteran team like Obituarynotice has both those picks that 'great minds think alike, but fools seldom differ'.

    Always next year...

  13. In continuing the trend of selling all the moments/feels (thanks @drol - this description is perfect) and a true joker performance @maryportfuncity (~50 teams jokered him of 166 for the 2024 DDP), yet another article with a health update with nothing of value.

Jonnie Irwin urged 'keep fighting' as he issues fresh terminal cancer update

Here's the 'I'm not clicking on that link' summary:

     - link of an interview he did with a carer who's helped him who also has a book

     - the article itself is just a collection of comments from people who listened to the interview

Yes you are with Franz Beckenbauer!

So this now increases the penalty to -3 with Johns, Draper and Beckenbauer not able to be selected.  The window for entries is still open, but I admit it will take some encouragement to get others to sign on with that handicap!

Today is the last day for entries.

I know that with the penalties in place it is a significant handicap, but think of the achievement when you win!
