Bodybuilders don't have the best reputations when it comes to physical feature enhancement. While not all have resorted to artificial help, many have done so. The results may have produced large physiques, but they've also resulted in side effects, serious medical issues and even death. And since the latter is what this site is all about, perhaps it's time bodybuilders got their own thread.

Mr. Olympia winners, excluding Arnie:

 

Ken Waller (1942-) Heavyweight, 1976. 

Frank Zane (1942-) Lightweight & Overall 1977-1979, looks a bit pale but physically otherwise in great condition.

Robby Robinson (1946-) Heavyweight 1977 and 1978. Hospitalised with sickle cell anaemia in 2019 and said that he "doesn't fear death", now again in better condition.

Chris Dickerson (1939-2021) Mr. Olympia 1982 and one of the first openly gay bodybuilders, has walked with a cane for years. After a fall in March 2020 he suffered a major heart attack and while in a care center caught covid. 

Samir Bannout (1955-) Mr. Olympia 1983 "Lion of Lebanon", still in great condition and I don't think he'll go anytime soon.

Lee Haney (1959-) Mr. Olympia 1984-1991. Clearly has used steroids but not as much as the ones who came after him. Also avoided injuries.

Dorian Yates (1962-) Mr. Olympia 1992-1997. A bit like Haney.

Ronnie Coleman (1964-) Mr. Olympia 1998-2005. Has been in and out of hospital for years.

Jay Cutler (1973-) Mr. Olympia 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010. Still quite young but has probably used steroids since he was a teenager.

Dexter Jackson (1969-) Mr. Olympia 2008. Has used a ton of steroids as almost every modern bodybuilder.

Phil Heath (1979-) Mr. Olympia 2011-2017. Looks like he could explode.

The most recent ones, Brandon Curry and Big Ramy are still under 40.

 

 

Out of the Ms. Olympias, Rachel McLish (first champion 1980 and 1982, 1955-) is still in decent condition. Second champion Ritva Elomaa (1981, 1955-) was recently widowed. 

 

Others:

Earl Maynard (1935-) Third place in the first Mr. Olympia, 1965.

Dave Draper (1942-2021) Third place in Mr. Olympia 1967, used to suffer from alcoholism.

Jari Mentula, nicknamed "Bull" (1976-) Media personality and former bodybuilder, suffering from severe heart failure.

Updated the list. 82, a grand old age for a bodybuilder and it's even more impressive is how last year he survived a fall followed by a massive heart attack, spent days on ventilator, got a pacemaker and contracted covid in a rehabilitation facility but survived all of this. In addition to winning 15 professional bodybuilding titles he was known for being one of the first gay bodybuilders, the first African-American AAU Mr. America and of course the first gay Mr. Olympia.

That's just not true. They get considerably older than 82. Jack Lalanne (died at 96) and Bill Pearl (living, 91) being just two examples off the top of my head. It's the ones who abused steroids who don't get to old ages. Bodybuilding, in its natural form, is one of the healthiest things you can ever do for your body as you're working every single muscle in the body, including the ones that are often neglected. Not exercising muscle groups leads to immobility and muscle failure as you age.

Silver Era bodybuilder and icon Marvin Eder passed away on February 1, 2022 at 90 years old. Eder, known as the “Biceps From The Bronx” was known not only for his aesthetic physique but also for his impressive feats of strength. He was a both a bodybuilder and a weightlifter.

Marvin Eder was a bodybuilder who competed during the Silver Era of the sport – with contemporaries such as Reg Park and Steve Reeves.

Typical of the Silver Era, Marvin Eder weighed approx. 200 pounds during his prime years of competing and ultimately grew to a height of 5′ 8″ by adulthood. He had 19-inch arms, 50-inch chest, 17.5 inch calves and 26.5 inch thighs.

Marvin Eder’s career was ultimately a short one – only competing for two years in 1949 and 1950.

Cedric McMillan, 2017 Arnold Classic winner and "one of the leading bodybuilders of the 21st century" dead at 44 according to wikipedia and social media posts. Couldn't find a proper news obituary or anything from credible sources atleast yet but it hasn't been denied and he'd been ill for a while with heart and stomach issues

Paul Poloczek has died at the age of 37. The cause of Paul’s death is not known at this time. Paul leaves a young daughter and a wife behind him.

Paul was an IFBB Pro from Poland, and the news of his death came from his spouse, Katherin DeNev. She shared the news on her Instagram, alongside a heart-wrenching caption. Just a few hours before his sudden death, Paul Poloczek was seen at the NPC Worldwide Championships in Baden-Württemberg.

Not sure if this even fits here, I wouldn't call this guy a bodybuilder, but he doesn't really fit into the performance drug athletes thread either as he was certainly not an athlete...

 

"Brazilian Hulk" Valdir Segato, "bodybuilder" who injected himself with Synthol for years dead on his 55th birthday from a heart attack. He's the one who had massive breasts.
