gcreptile 10,963 Posted August 12 Yeah, that does explain why it was the team "Alternative Observations 2021" that had him. Think I accidentally switched over to the 2021 pages, looking at GUN's K2-expedition team (a mountaineer named Sadpara died recently but he was not the one who was picked back then.) Ah well, at least still LotM.
time 8,586 Posted August 12 I notice Dave Lee, the celebrated composer/musician is 98 today; however his birthday in the DDP is 8th December. I'm assuming this just confusion caused by USA writing their dates down wrongly. I'll amend his DDP entry accordingly, just on the off-chance he's died today. drunkasaskunk 194 Posted August 27 Would the scoreboard look significantly different if Yahoo news (which merely copies and pastes articles from publications that are NOT allowed for QOs) was removed as a valid source of QOs? I find it absurd that a reference to a death written in (say) The Grindelwald Gazette is NOT a QO, but a copy and paste of the exact same article on uk.news.yahoo.com news IS a QO.

Good question, and one which I might investigate further when I have time. There are currently 34 'yahoo' QOs listed, though some also have mainstream obits too, so not simply a case of knocking out those 'yahoo'-sourced hits. It reminds me of an exercise I undertook some time ago to see if the application of the 'Drop 40' bonus significantly affected the scoreboard (it didn't - all the top contenders had similar numbers of Drop-40s, so tended to cancel each other out).

drunkasaskunk 194 Posted August 29 I suspect that including uk.news.yahoo.com news will NOT make a significant difference - which raises the question as to WHY it is included at all? A mention of a death in telegraph.co.uk, thetimes.co.uk, ft.com, theguardian.com, dailymail.co.uk, express.co.uk, dailystar.co.uk, thesun.co.uk and many many more DOES COUNT as a QO A mention of a death in uk.news.yahoo.com news which COPIES AND PASTES THE EXACT SAME ARTICLE from ....telegraph.co.uk, thetimes.co.uk, ft.com, theguardian.com, dailymail.co.uk, express.co.uk, dailystar.co.uk, thesun.co.uk and many many more DOES COUNT as a QO HOWEVER - a mention of a death in www.wfla.com, space.com or www.theinverBallachulishGazette.Scot ( to name a few) does NOT count as a QO - HOWEVER the exact same article that DOES NOT COUNT AS A QO DOES count if someone copies and pastes them into the uk.news.yahoo.com site.
