Derby Dead Pool 2024

Okay, I have followed OoO's suggestion of pursuing much slimmer roundups rather than full fledged obits.

This is definitely far more feasible. Maybe an hour or two whereas the obits were much more. As always let me know if LotL/M names slipped by... I'll try to be more on top of things now that I'm making the obit side of things less stressful. I guess this makes Scott Thorson my last big headliner obit. :P

Glad you've found the balance between carrying on the good work and still having a life.

Would be kind of fitting if the one team that didn't pick Carter is the team that wins the DDP.

Dikembe Mutombo QO - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/nba/article-13907833/Dikembe-Mutombo-dead-58-brain-cancer-NBA.html

Takes It's A Grim World After All to the lead if I twigged correctly.

I think amongst that top grouping of 5 or so I also have Noam Chomsky and Theo Burrell as uniques. Also have Janey Godley but not sure she’s nailed on for this year. All to play for!

In last years stat crunching (yes, I know, there's no way to make it sound un-nerdy) Burrell's prognosis seemed likely to take her into 2025 but not 2026, so if she does go before January 1st that'd be a deserved title winning hit imo.

Unless of course the only 2 top 20 hits left are George Beattie and PJ Hammond (20 unique points for Pan Breed)! :D

Realistically, I'm going to need a combination of Kamolvisit and Patrick Murray to win, considering the joint picks of the top 4.

That, or a Daniel o'Donnell weepie of a 'tough year' to the Daily Mail where he mentions K Cavanagh....

Carter would put me in the lead but I'm almost certainly going to need more points because I don't have Godley. Kamolvisit going (95% chance) and QOing (80% chance, less if it's a busy news week) would give me some nice breathing room. Elmore Smith going would be close to sewing it up for me, but that's probably less than a 50/50 (he was always high risk/high reward as a pick).

I currently see Janey Godley, Ch. Kamolvisit and Sean Wallace as very likely to score (Wallace stopped posting on social media in June). Keeps the current leader ahead by one point.

Chomsky is for me as likely to go as Carter (Does anybody have both of them?).

In the top 20, @gcreptile you are the only one with both of them.  Many Carter picks, but again nullified by frequency and the -1 point for age 100.

Jokers are the biggest issue still.  And taking the comments above into account, these are threats to the crowded top 5 - a narrow spread to 111 to 114 pts!  And this is a quick glance, so any omissions are my own fault.

Legend: rank/pts   name - picks

=7/104 I Will not die… - Burrell (26 pts) joker

= 10/101 Going Underground – Burrell and Godley, Maxwell joker (20 pts)

=18/97 2025? No thank you – Carter, Burrell (26 pts) joker

=18/97 Love Boat – Carter and Chomsky

3 of the top five have Burrell (13 pts); two past champs (Banana, OoO) don’t.

With 4 previous winners in top 20, and 3 in top 5, the next 91 days as @Thatcher said is 'all to play for'!

Does anybody know how old Frank Fritz actually was? DDP has his D.o.B as November '65, which makes him 58 at death. Most reports put him at 60 at death. (It's only 1 point, and it won't exactly affect the medal positions, but we strive for accuracy!).

Every single obit says he was 60. The 1965 birthdate probably originates from wrong original research or IMDb. I would go with what the obits are saying.

I have had a look at last years DDP.

2023 saw 312 hits

Of these 47 (just over 15%) had UK Yahoo as the official death Notice

Of these 47 I have subsequently found OTHER QOs for 28 of them, leaving 29 with no other QO save from Yahoo

Of the YAHOO QOs, Yahoo has simply copied and pasted articles from sources that are NOT QO sources.

These include, but are not limited to

•    Associated Press
•    Bloomberg
•    Boston 25 News
•    Deadline
•    Hollywood Reporter
•    Los Angeles Times
•    Niagara Gazette, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
•    Pensacola News Journal
•    Reuters
•    Rolling Stone
•    Texas Tribune
•    The News-Gazette, Champaign-Urbana, Ill.
•    The Register-Herald, Beckley, W.Va.
•    USA Today
•    Vibe

Quite a few of the Yahoo links no longer work so I couldn’t see what source they copied and pasted from.

If USA Today and the Pensacola News Journal count as QOs when the UK Yahoo search engine publishes them why can’t USA Today and the Pensacola News Journal count as QOs in their own right?

These are the scoring hits that I can only find Yahoo as a QO

Perhaps folk with better researching skills than I have can find other QOs apart from Yahoo for the ones that I was unable to find.

Further, if someone who is better at stats than me can ascertain how – if at all – ridding the copy and pasting bot at UK Yahoo as a QO source would effect the result.

I THINK IT IS TIME TO SHOW YAHOO THE DOOR.

Thanks for reading.

I am likely never going to agree with you on this, however I commend your conviction.

My point is, and I think I've made this argument before, is that Yahoo allows more international picks and stops the DDP from becoming insular around the UK. Of the 29 you listed all but one of them are not UK based, John Sainty being the exception. As much as I understand that the DDP is a UK focused deadpool, it is open internationally and accepts picks from all around the world. Even if Yahoo only provided an unique QO for one hit, I would still back it's inclusion as a valid source, as, in my opinion, it makes the game more equal to international players.

Your point on the stupidity of Yahoo being allowed when all it does is copy articles from sources that aren't allowed, is unarguable, however I see that as a sign to widen the number of allowed sources rather than simply to cut out Yahoo. The pool I run on this site allows anything as a QO as long as death is definitive, as I love having a more diverse set of picks, but I would never argue for anything near that for the DDP. Instead I think that some of Yahoo's most common sources should be allowed as QOs in the DDP and then, and only then, would I support the removal of Yahoo from the list. I feel like that would be a reasonable compromise, but I have the feeling you'd still be against it.

Well, the question is:  ARE there sources out there who would provide QOs which are otherwise missing?

Willz asked for The Stage during the Borusa-Gate issue!

I don't see why principal industry magazines shouldn't be considered.

I'm not necessarily advocating it, but if you use Yahoo, do you use MSN? That would've covered at least 3 hits this year I think

I thought MSN was removed from the list of sources a number of years ago?
