Oh the KoS, babe, has such teeth, dear...as the scarlet billows of 93 other songs spread, we crown Bobby Darin’s Mack The Knife our KoS Champion for the 1950s No.1s! Initially written in the 20s for a German musical drama, recorded by Louis Armstrong to some acclaim (reaching No.8 in the UK) then a few years later polished and perfected by the dulcet tones of the late, great Bobby Darin, this song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame 40 years after its release. Now, to mark its 65th anniversary, it has achieved the greater honour of being inducted into the Deathlist Dot Net Kill or Save HoF, and rightly bleedin’ so.

See, below, the results of this Threepenny Opera:

  1. Bobby Darin — Mack The Knife
  2. Bill Haley & His Comets — Rock Around The Clock
  3. The Everly Brothers — All I Have To Do Is Dream / Claudette
  4. Elvis Presley — Jailhouse Rock
  5. Bobby Darin — Dream Lover
  6. Tennessee Ernie Ford — Sixteen Tons
  7. Connie Francis — Stupid Cupid / Carolina Moon
  8. Paul Anka — Diana
  9. The Teenagers ft. Frankie Lymon — Why Do Fools Fall In Love
  10. Rosemary Clooney & The Mellomen — Mambo Italiano
  11. The Platters — Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
  12. Jerry Lee Lewis — Great Balls Of Fire
  13. Guy Mitchell — Singing The Blues
  14. Elvis Presley — All Shook Up
  15. Frankie Laine — I Believe
  16. Perry Como & The Ramblers — Starstruck
  17. Alma Cogan — Dreamboat
  18. Mantovani & His Orchestra — The Song From Moulin Rouge
  19. The Crickets — That’ll Be The Day
  20. Rosemary Clooney — This Ole House
  21. Prez Prado & His Orchestra — Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White
  22. Kay Starr — Comes A-Long A-Love
  23. Tony Bennett — Stranger In Paradise
  24. Doris Day — Que Sera Sera
  25. Johnston Brothers — Hernando’s Hideaway

I worried at first that the 50s would be nothing like as rich in stone cold classics as we often see in later rounds, but I was wrong; that was an elite tier final if you ask me. That’s not, of course, to say that everything was good; I mean, look at this shonky lot:

The Stargazers — Broken Wings

Eddie Fisher ft. Sally Sweetland — I’m Walking Behind You

Eddie Fisher — Outside Of Heaven

Lita Roza — How Much Is That Doggie In The Window

The Stargazers — I See The Moon

Dickie Valentine — Christmas Alphabet

Don Cornell — Hold My Hand

Eddie Calvert — Oh, Mein Papa

Slim Whitman — Rose Marie

Ruby Murray — Softly Softly

Vera Lynn — My Son, My Son

Harry Belafonte — Mary’s Boy Child

Pat Boone — I’ll Be Home

Dreamweavers — It’s Almost Tomorrow

Kay Starr — Rock And Roll Waltz

Tab Hunter — Young Love

Frankie Laine — A Woman In Love

Tommy Steele & The Steelmen — Singing The Blues

Cliff Richard — Living Doll

Cliff Richard & The Shadows — Travellin’ Light

Michael Holliday — The Story Of My Life

Kalin Twins — When

Russ Conway — Side Saddle

Tommy Edwards — It’s All In The Game

Adam Faith — What Do You Want?

Anyway, for at least another 5-and-a-bit years, that concludes our UK No.1s decades games! Now to finish off the No.2s, and I wonder if it might be better to stick with the 1950s first? Having it run with the 90s No.3s and then the 10s finishing up while we’re doing the 60s No.3s will keep us nicely either end of the timeline.

Either way, thanks again for playing, and I’ll see you in the next one!

The grand serial murder tale always felt apt to win this contest on DeathList and I think it's the first time my absolute favorite song in the game won the whole thing. Though the gap between Mack the Knife and All I Have To Do Is Dream is very close.

Felt like doing a ranking of the final too; a lot of the list is fluid though I'm pretty secure in my top four

  1. Bobby Darin — Mack The Knife
  2. The Everly Brothers — All I Have To Do Is Dream / Claudette
  3. The Platters — Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
  4. Bobby Darin — Dream Lover
  5. The Crickets — That’ll Be The Day
  6. Tennessee Ernie Ford — Sixteen Tons
  7. Elvis Presley — Jailhouse Rock
  8. Bill Haley & His Comets — Rock Around The Clock
  9. The Teenagers ft. Frankie Lymon — Why Do Fools Fall In Love
  10. Paul Anka — Diana
  11. Jerry Lee Lewis — Great Balls Of Fire
  12. Kay Starr — Comes A-Long A-Love
  13. Connie Francis — Stupid Cupid / Carolina Moon
  14. Rosemary Clooney & The Mellomen — Mambo Italiano
  15. Johnston Brothers — Hernando’s Hideaway
  16. Elvis Presley — All Shook Up
  17. Guy Mitchell — Singing The Blues
  18. Doris Day — Que Sera Sera
  19. Rosemary Clooney — This Ole House
  20. Alma Cogan — Dreamboat
  21. Prez Prado & His Orchestra — Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White
  22. Frankie Laine — I Believe

This is kinda related to this game. I bought Jerry Lee Lewis's greatest hits on vinyl today along with some other records (I somehow found a Tom Lehrer vinyl, never thought I'd see one where I live!).
