Fly-past for Britain's oldest man

The RAF has scheduled a fly-past over the East Sussex coast to celebrate the 110th birthday of Britain's oldest man, Henry Allingham.

Two tornadoes from 31 squadron are to fly over the Grand Hotel in Eastbourne for the anniversary on Tuesday.

Do you think - like - fighting in a war is the secret of a long-life?

Nah, me neither.

No, I think not dying until you are very very old is the secret to a long life.

They have a name for that sort of phrase but I forget what it is.

According to Mr. Allingham, the secret is whisky, Woodbines and Wild Women.

So most of us should get a good innings then.

If he makes it to the 1st of January I may 'sell out' and put him on my DDP.

Anyhow, Happy Birthday to him. A new supercentenarian.

On the other hand, this 111-year-old lady says no drink, no ciggies and plenty of porridge and sweeties are a certain recipe for longevity.

And she didn't mention sex at all.

EDIT:

On re-reading the article I noticed she resides in Aberdeen's Royal Cornhill Hospital, a well-known lunatic asylum.

So her evidence would be unlikely to be admissible in a court of law. /EDIT

I thought it was odd to keep her in cornhil. At 111 there's not much she can do that a proper care home can't deal with.

How very odd indeed. I think I shall write to my MP...even though it's none of his business.

Will alcopops & a toyboy do for the ladies amongst us?

I seen this lady's photo in the local paper. Guiness are investigating to see if she is Britain's oldest living person. Having seen her photo, I would put her down for DDP next year if she is cleared as Britain's oldest (if you want to cheat that is).

Leon Weil

"Death of Leon Weil, 109, leaves France with six surviving veterans of World War I"

Respect and gratitude to the guy, he sounds like quite a chap!

Henry Allingham in 'The Sun' today says the secret of a long life is to keep breathing.

I was wondering if it was some kind of off-kilter Budhist observation but, on reflection, I doubt it.

Very good advice indeed. Work of a true comic genius, too. Maybe he should take up a comedy circuit as he goes round the UK.

Now there's an idea! He could take the stage to the sound of shelling and machine guns and open with the line: 'I wanna tell ya Somme jokes!'

6 - Frenchmen

Death of Leon Weil, 109, leaves France with 6 WW1 veterans

by ap 2006-June-08

Leon Weil, one of France's last living veterans of First World War, has died aged 109. He was mobilized in August 1916 at age 20 and sent to the Western Front. "He who says that he was not afraid during the war is a liar. The Germans were like us, poor guys getting beaten up for nothing," Weil said in an interview in which he recounted bayonet charges under fire. In World War II, Weil was an active member of an intelligence network for the Resistance. He went under the code name "Victor." He was decorated as a combatant in both wars and was awarded France's highest award, the Legion of Honor.

19 - Americans

One of the last 19 or so Americans who served in WWI still living

by koin 2006-April-03

At 108 years old Howard Ramsey has forgotten more than most people experience in a lifetime. His dad drove one of the first cars ever seen in Telluride, Colorado. "There wer no roads, no signs, no roadblocks, no nothing, just dirt road." He graduated in 1916 and went off to WWI. He chaueffered lots of officers, found time to pose for photos while holding a German machine gun. Howard is one of the last remaining 19 or so Americans who served in WWI still living. Howard understands a lot of things but still can't understand why people pay two dollars for a cup of Starbuck's Coffee.

3 - Canadians

Legion urges proper honours for 3 final First World War veterans

by canada 2006-May-23

The Royal Canadian Legion wants the government to host a "significant commemoration" when the last of Canada's First World War veterans dies. With the death of Clare Laking, the number of known First World War veterans still living is down to 3. Lloyd Clemett, 106, lives in Toronto. Percy Dwight Wilson, 105, lives in Oshawa and John Babcock, 105, lives in Spokane. Given the dwindling numbers, and the advanced ages of the remaining three, the topic of what to do when the last First World War veteran passes away has been on the minds of decision-makers at Veterans Affairs.

Being respectful, does anyone know if there is any way to know how many World War I veterans are still living? I haven't found a website which addresses this. Most vets from the "Big War" would be around 100 at this time. The last one around my area passed away like 8 years ago at age 97.
