Well I said "I expect" and "but who knows". As @Master Obit correctly pointed out the other day, at that age it's all up in the air. Look at Germany's Charlotte. She was one of the healthiest looking supercentenarians, and she went before many of the living corpses. Similarly, I'm shocked that Ethel Caterham has outlived Tinniswood. 1

Looks like he died following a fall a few weeks prior. Sad but what a remarkable life, and definitely nicer to go without a long decline than spending years in a very frail state.

Oldest in Finland now I believe is Arvi Hämäläinen, born in January 1917. Quite a drop. I mentioned Hämäläinen here some months ago, he's a (very slightly) locally notable costume designer and has had multiple hospitalisations since 2021.
lay_kulast95 131 Posted December 4, 2024 Since his name has finally been made public, I can make this post. To answer an old question, the final man from the 1900s decade is likely Manoel Ribiero da Silva of Brazil (b. 19 May 1909). Although unvalidated, I have good faith his age is indeed correct. He is Semi-Documented. 2
Ulitzer95 13,058 Posted December 7, 2024 Britain's "oldest living man" Haji Ghulam Mohammed dies just days before his 110th birthday. Also a WWII veteran. His age wasn't verifiable, owing the the state of British India that he was born and their poor records, however I actually think he may have been a legitimate claimant and I haven't seen any scepticism online. Britain's oldest man is now Donald Rose, who will turn 110 in just over 2 weeks. He is due to be validated early in the new year!

The guy was clearly very old, but I'm skeptical of 109. "Poor records" is the most common subterfuge people use to inflate their age. It's incredibly convenient because if the records don't exist then nobody can disprove it. Until any hard evidence is made available that he was born in 1914, I'm not going to believe it. I'm sure the GRG will verify him soon, though. They don't need documents to "validate" a claim, so long as it looks like they're producing output to compete with LQ. There must be a portion of people born in a place and time with poor records who are their claimed age. Anyway, he's dead and as you said he never officially held the title, just like the immortal Fraudster Singh. We move on – all eyes on Donald Rose, who looks pretty frail to me. Can see him being a 2025 faller.

So you've got: England: Ethel Caterham (115)/Donald Rose (109) Scotland: Jenny Smart (109)/Hugh Kerr (109) Wales: Kathleen Somerville (108)/Owen Filer (105) Northern Ireland: Agnes Thompson (109)/Norman Irwin (106) Ireland: Ruby Druce (108)/Joe Veselsky (106) A lot of mega-oldies don't really get coverage anymore: neither of the Scots have, for example. These are also only the oldest folk who've been identified: it's possible there's older folk who are anonymous. 5
