Very. The majority of them are straight guys who've been drawn into the industry by offers of pay for gay or couldn't make it into the straight porn industry. Drug addiction is often a driving factor as well (as mentioned in the comments on that page, how does a 26 year old die of a heart attack?)

If they dug out the few survivors of the 70s porn era and obliged them to re-arrange their aged bodies into the combinations that got them paid back then; would you pay good money to have physical copies of the results posted to you in a plain brown wrapper. As an aside,  Juliet 'Aunt Peg' Anderson  ( 1938 - 2010 ) star of countless US Porn Films from the Swedish Erotica stable did return to porn in the late 90s.

I'm now wondering about how many of those 'mature' porn stars out there have been banging away for a couple of decades or more.

Good question. IAFD lists Jeremy's career as lasting from 1979 to 2017 (apparently he had his official on-camera retirement this year?), so 38 years. That equals the career of Herschel Savage, who was popping shots from 1974's "Hardly Married" to 2012's "Handjobs and Handcuffs". Joey SIlvera managed 44 years though, 1971-2015. 

 

Careers for female performers are, unsurprisingly, somewhat shorter.

To be fair the female performers who stay drug free and sane tend to get paid more per movie on average than their male counterparts. How many of them invest that and reap the rewards I dunno.

The female stars from the bygone era didn't actually get paid that much.

Anderson, according to the wiki page, seems to have been ripped off at one stage and led her to retire and do other stuff, although her stage show carried on regardless.

Candida Royalle is, possibly, the best known ex performers turned directors.

A few others like Nina Hartley, IIRC, did have the odd jaunt into films where shagging was not on the agenda.

Actually, a great many porn actors/actresses began their careers in film/TV work before going into porn.

There is an old and poor quality cine film out there of, allegedly, Joan Crawford giving somebody a blow job.

I've seen it and I have no idea if it is her.

So an honourable exception to the list above is Andrea True who made a fair bit of dosh filming a porno in the west indies only to discover that taking said cash out of the country would result in a sizeable tax bill. She - therefore - spent it whilst out there recording More More More (her biggest disco hit - for which the lyrics are pretty much an account of her professional skill on screen). Granted her career tanked later and she made a late period return to porn, apparently. I've long rated her music as subtly subversive but can't say I'm familiar with the screen career.

Also the timing of it all and how the person dies play a  factor,seems unlikely someone of Yurizan Beltran's level of relative popularity would have gotten that Daily Star writeup if not for the Augst Ames story a few weeks. And even August Ames if she just died of a regular old fashioned OD or suicide would not have garnered that much news if their wasn't an accompanied story about internet bullying.
