DoorSlammer 563 Posted October 16, 2022 That article mentions Joshi was 103, not 102.
arghton 6,756 Posted October 16, 2022 He was born in 1920. Wikipedia's living centenarians category had him having been born in 1919, it's because of that East Asian Age Reckoning, but we have a picture of his passport that confirms he wasn't born then. Summer in Transylvania 2,190 Posted October 16, 2022 His death marks the first newcomer to my 2023 Shadowlist to die before the corresponding year begins. He spent just 12 days on it. Last year it was Chun Doo-hwan (who lasted 8 days), having cobbled my list together shortly after the death of F. W. de Klerk, who was also scheduled to make the starting line.

arghton 6,756 Posted October 16, 2022 The Nepali VP saying he'll be discharged soon...Almost goes into the same category as the health minister of Maharashtra saying Lata Mangeshkar had "completely recovered" a week before her death and Shivakumara Swami recovering three days before his death. And I'm sure there have been ton of similar cases in notable Asians 13 out of the 30 2022 additions now dead. I'm sure atleast two or three more will die this year. I'm amazed by how tough Kaikala Satyanarayana has turned out to be. 87, permanent tracheostomy seemingly connected to either oxygen or a ventilator since multiple organ failure, septic shock and other ailments in November 2021.
drol 11,957 Posted October 16, 2022 Satya Mohan Joshi (1920-2022) He liked to throw eggs at strangers Age at death: 102 Known health issues: Pneumonia and pulmonary edema in 2014, heart disease and ICU in 2021, hospitalised three times in 2022 with just everything. Cause of death: Complications from dengue, heart disease, prostate cancer, lung failure..... yada yada yada Alignment: Great writer and folklorist, beloved in Nepal. Very good guy overall, just he never died. 4
arghton 6,756 Posted October 20, 2022 By the way, BBC Nepali also published an article on Joshi's death, that for example mentions he was on his "deathbed" with malaria in 1944. V. S. Achuthanandan is 99 today. New article. He'll celebrate at home with no visitors as doctors have put him in home quarantine due to the fact that he's extremely frail and any infection could probably kill him. What I found interesting in this article was this part: V. A. Arunkumar, his son, told a television channel that Mr. Achuthanandan retained his awareness and was visibly saddened when informed about the death of his long-time party colleague and CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, recently. "Retained his awareness"? At this point must be one of the oldest CMs ever. Morarji Desai lived 41 days past 99, Sikkim's first CM Kazi Lhendup Dorjee lived to 102. Also one of the last of CPIM's "old guard" with N. Sankaraiah, maybe Nabeesa Ummal and Paloli Mohammed Kutty. P. K. Gurudasan, TK Hamza, Anathalavattom Anandan, S. Ramachandran Pillai, Vaikom Viswan, Pirappancode Murali, fellow immortal Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Pinarayi Vijayan could be a bit too young to be considered old guard. CPIM has produced a lot of immortals.

I think 30 names is reasonable; list is in the making. 1)Nguyễn Côn (1917-2022): Vietnamese Deputy PM, looked like a cadaver in 2015, looks like a skeleton now, so much Vietnam media have to censor his photos for how fucking dead he looks. 2)Jerry Lee Lewis (1935): major drug addict, father of 5000 illegittimate children and suffered major stroke in 2019. Honoring his namesake's legacy. 3)Bob Barker (1923): Stroke in 1991 and 2002, prostate ailments and twice hospitalised after falling in recent years. Only alive because Sir Cunto said he wouldn't make it to 95. 4)Rafiq Tarar (1929-2022): this guy looked like a zombie in 2017! That's 5 fucking years!!! Widowed in 2020. 5)Shahabuddin Ahmed (1930-2022): looked like a zombie in early 2018, when he survived a long hospitalization for gastric hemorrhage. Reportedly gravely ill and receiving treatment early this year. Well, JLL is dead. 14/30 dead from the Class of 2022 this far. Edit: Well, JLL is undead. 13/30.

Plus the fact all the Chinese are still alive scares me. Has old Wang already translated "death" in Chinese? Because it's always useful to learn new words. Wang Huo makes a rare appearance and looks pretty great, even though he again looks like a completely different person than a few months ago: And still not one of them dead. Zhang Lixiong, Yang You, maybe also perennially ill politician Luo Gan deserve a spot on next year's list IMO. Founding Major General Tu Tongjin has no English wikipedia page but he's also been very ill for years and permanently hospitalised, and is now 108.

With Tu Tongjin and Zhang Lixiong there's actually a suprisingly large amount of info on them on the internet for ancient Asian politicians (and both much more interesting figures than the thousands of 70-something Indian MLAs with English wiki pages), both have long Baike pages. Tu Tongjin was also interviewed by Los Angeles Times in January 2008.

arghton 6,756 Posted November 25, 2022 A while ago I discovered there's also a thing called "oriental writer award". It was given out only once in 2013, to three people and was then discontinued. Who were those three? Oriental Writer Award: Jiang Zilong Oriental Writer Lifetime Achievement Award: Ma Shitu and Wang Huo, of course. Are we sure this award isn't the key to living forever? Virata made an appearance this week, looked fine:

Lower level suggestions include Thuingaleng Muivah (Hospitalised a million times with stomach problems, etc), Than Shwe (Diabetic, rumored cancer), Ronnie de Mel, Rafiq Nishonov, Nizoramo Zaripova, Subroto, Robert Kuok, Swaroopanand Saraswati, David Murdock (All simply ancient, no known major health problems), Thomas Markle, Peter Tobin, Juhani Palmu, Sharad Pawar, Nritya Gopal Das and radio Alan Jones (All "young", but with a million health problems), Benjamin Blech (Cardiac amyloidosis diagnosis in 2010, given six months to live back then), Rembert Weakland (Hospice care since around 2017, but could be a faker?), Theodoros Pangolos and Moses Ali (Morbidly obese octogenarians), Robin Hanbury-Tenison (Month on ventilator with covid, made a full recovery), Siiri Rantanen (Survived amputation in her 90s), Pasqual Maragall, Prunella Scales, Margarita Terekhova (Perennial dementia sufferers), QEII, Guy Warren (Stroke at 100), Mohammed Rahmati Sirjani (Survived being in coma in 2020, but probably a too obscure name) Ayatollah Wahid Khorasani and Tahar Zbiri. Only 3/30 dead from my main suggestions list this far and none from the top 10, they're doing very well..Really interesting how Otis Taylor is still alive, but we'll see if he makes it to 2023. Logically should've died a decade ago and in July he seemed to have a few weeks to live. The Patriarch of Crete is also pretty impressive, at 89 he's survived with ALS longer than many half his age. It's also over two years since he had a tracheotomy.
