Vinegar Tits 606 Posted December 2, 2006 French actress Claude Jade who appeared in several Francois Truffaut films had died aged 58. How sad. I've just watched Stolen Kisses, Bed & Board and Love On The Run this morning before knowing she was dead
weatherman90 7 Posted December 2, 2006 Some older members might remember Shocking Blue's number one hit "Venus" in 1970. Anyway, apparently the lead singer, Mariska Veres, has died, according to a dutch source. From what I can translate, she was 59 and died from "incurable disease". http://www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artikelen/20...iska_veres.html

From what I can translate, she was 59 and died from "incurable disease". http://www.nos.nl/nosjournaal/artikelen/20...iska_veres.html Damn. She was on my secret 2007 DDP list. For your convenience a translation of that atricle: Singer Mariska Veres has died Saturday afternoon. She suffered from an incurable disease[1]. In the 70s she was the voice of world famous pop band Shocking Blue from The Hague, with which she scored a world hit Venus. Veres was born in 1947 from a Hungarian gipsy violinist and a German mother and she showed an early talent for music. At sixteen she began her carreer at a students' group Les Mysteres, followed by the Blue Fighters, the Bumble Bees, Danny and his Favorites and the Motowns and eventually in 1968 Shocking Blue. Shocking Blue had existed since 1967, but they were looking for a new singer because their current one was draughted for military service. Venus A year after her joining the band it achieved world fame with Venus, that got to the top of the charts in, among other countries, Japan and the USA. In the Netherlands Venus was listed in the charts twice, but never got a better position than number three. Two other songs, Mighty Joe and Never Marry a Railroad Man did reach the number one position in the Dutch Top 40, but never acquired the fame of Venus. Life The band existed till 1974. In the 80s there was a failed attempt to reunite the band. In 1993 the singer released a jazz album, but because of enduring calls for Shocking Blue she started, with the other members' permission, a new band with the same name. Last year the singer toured eight Dutch theatres with her band. Mariska Veres was 59. [1] In Dutch death notices "incurable disease" is a euphemism for cancer. regards, Hein

Vinegar Tits 606 Posted December 2, 2006 Damn. She was on my secret 2007 DDP list. So you knew she was ill then? The drummer died a couple of years ago didn't he? Can't remember what of off-hand. Great singer: sort of the Dutch Grace Slick, and Shocking Blue were a fantastic band - plenty of other wonderful songs as well as 'Venus'. I shall play 'Send Me A Postcard' in memory. I suspect she will get a UK obit of some sort, though ''Venus' singer dies' will get a few people crying: "Oh God, one of Bananarama's copped it"...
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted December 2, 2006 Damn. She was on my secret 2007 DDP list. So you knew she was ill then? I read in it a Dutch tabloid early in the year. I suppose the news will eventually leak to English language news sources. I don't think she would have been DL material, but good enough for a DDP unique pick. Oh well. The drummer died a couple of years ago didn't he? Can't remember what of off-hand. His name was Cor van der Beek; I don't know if he lives or not. I couldn't find something online quickly. I suspect she will get a UK obit of some sort, though ''Venus' singer dies' will get a few people crying: "Oh God, one of Bananarama's copped it"... Here's a clip of the real thing. regards, Hein
Whitehouse 872 Posted December 3, 2006 For those who don't remember, this song was the original. The Bananarama version might be better known around the world but this still is the better one. His name was Cor van der Beek; I don't know if he lives or not. I couldn't find something online quickly. Funny Found the info in seconds. here someone replies to a thread that he died 8 years ago. The post was made April 2006. More compelling evidence.

People of my generation remember the Bananarama version better, though even we could tell it wasn't a Stock/Aitken/Waterman composed song as it had more than 4 notes. OK, so he died on 8 April 1998, 49 years old. The article suggests (but doesn't state) that he drank himself to death. My failure to find this info had its cause in that I tried to find an English language source. regards, Hein

Indeed it is, though I suspect it's one of those songs that you couldn't do a bad version of (see also: Spirit In The Sky - even the Gareth Gates/Kumars version wasn't bad). Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted December 3, 2006 Indeed it was the very same 'truck-driver's gear change, so beloved of writers and producers with a distinct lack of imagination. I once played (I was young, I needed the money) in a god-awful barn dance band run by a religious fascist of a singer. For laughs one night, the bored musos in the band shifted each verse of a song up a semi-tone until he was sweating like a priest in a playground at the very top of his vocal range.... Then drop it by a tone without warning him. I wasn't asked back.

In the words of Eric Idle Some things in life are bad They can really make you mad Other things just make you swear and curse. When you're chewing on life's gristle Don't grumble, give a whistle And this'll help things turn out for the best... And...always look on the bright side of life... Always look on the light side of life... If life seems jolly rotten There's something you've forgotten And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing. When you're feeling in the dumps Don't be silly chumps Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing. And...always look on the bright side of life... Always look on the light side of life... For life is quite absurd And death's the final word You must always face the curtain with a bow. Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin Enjoy it - it's your last chance anyhow. So always look on the bright side of death Just before you draw your terminal breath Life's a piece of sh*t When you look at it Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true. You'll see it's all a show Keep 'em laughing as you go Just remember that the last laugh is on you. And always look on the bright side of life... Always look on the right side of life... (Come on guys, cheer up!) Always look on the bright side of life... Always look on the bright side of life... (Worse things happen at sea, you know.) Always look on the bright side of life... (I mean - what have you got to lose?) (You know, you come from nothing - you're going back to nothing. What have you lost? Nothing!) Always look on the right side of life...
