Lady Die 63 Posted October 16, 2005 Has anyone ever lived anywhere with a silly or rude name? I once lived near Effingham (twinned with Blindingham?)

Lady Die 63 Posted October 16, 2005 There's a small village between my home town and Aberdeen called Tarty. So a young lady living there would be a Tarty girl!
Gunjaman5000 32 Posted October 16, 2005 Friends lived in a burg north of Auckland called Waipu (pron. why poo). Translated loosely as 'blood water' after a battle in pre-European times, the running gag was/is "it's not as bad as 'Waiwahakamukau'." (wh pronounced similar to the unvoiced labio-dental fricative, or f to be brief). Oh how we laugh driving through there.
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted October 16, 2005 "it's not as bad as 'Waiwahakamukau'." (wh pronounced similar to the unvoiced labio-dental fricative, or f to be brief). I'm confused, rather than amused. regards, Hein

3minutes2midnight 1 Posted October 16, 2005 The classic is the Austrian mountain village called f*****g, which has steadfastly refused to chage the town's name despite the 10s of thousands of euros it costs a year to replace the roadsigns, lifted by easily amused english (or anglo-saxon) tourists. Okay. we have a moderator problem here. There really is a place called effyouseekayeyeenngee.

Tuber Mirum 125 Posted October 16, 2005 Watched "Groundhog Day" last night, strangely enough since someone has mentioned it today already. Anyway, there's a (fictitious) place in the film called "Gobbler's Knob".
maryportfuncity 10,662 Posted October 16, 2005 All of which puts the Cumbrian village of Bothel in the shade. The sign has - on occasion - been modified with with an 'r' slipped in after the B. It's quiet, sleepy and the most exciting thing that ever happened was the burning down of a restaurant - widely rumoured to be an insurance job - over twenty years ago. Bald rick 9 Posted October 17, 2005 My brother went to school with someone from a place called Rodney Stoke. Not too far away is a village called Nempnett Thrubwell. I think Bill Bryson mentioned this in 'Notes from a Small Island'. Not rude, like some of the previous ones, but it might raise a anyway.
MyBrainHurts2 4 Posted October 17, 2005 There's a little town about 15 minutes from me that caught my eye: Boring, Maryland (US). Oh, and I love those shotglasses in Pennsylvania that simply say " I (heart) Intercourse", referring to the town, of course.
Cowboy Ronnie 78 Posted October 17, 2005 There's a Cockermouth somewhere in the UK. I always wished that's where Gillian Taylforth of Eastenders' fame was pulled over on the hard shoulder and caught in flagrante delicto with her hubbie and his trousers round his ankles. This led to our pub quiz team being named, for one night only, "Kathy Beale's Meals on Wheels", for which GR still receives massives props (although sadly no royalties) to this day. All non-UK DL'ers will probably understand very little of the above.
