Here comes the science: High Post Count + Low Post Quality = Post Whore If, in the light of the above link, you've recently discovered postwhoric symptoms in your posting habits, ask yourself a few simple questions... 1) Why do I feel the need to post in every thread? 2) Are all of my posts relevant and according to the spirit of the forum/thread in which I'm posting, i.e. will people gain value from reading them? 3) Would the overall quality of the forum be improved were I to be more selective with my posting? Canadian Paul 97 Posted March 20, 2006 My response to you here. In addition, it seems that you're the only memeber who mentions postcount without it being in reference to someone else's whining. As far as I can tell, you're the only member who actually cares about something like that. Or at the very least, you care more than the rest of us.

SC SC, To be bluntly frank, your bitching about the quality of posts on different forums has done nothing to contribute to the discussion. Tuber Mirum 125 Posted March 21, 2006 Isn't it interesting how this has become an issue? Smoke and fire and all that. In spite of Canadian paul's vehement Denial, it is an inimicable fact and for many a genuine problem that the quality on this forum has dropped since a few individuals have taken to diluting it with quantity and/or extreme low quality. The problem is compounded by the fact that many of the better posters don't feel there's anything worth responding to, and post less themselves, thus completing the vicious circle. So the advice to "leave" or ignore them" is in fact very, very poor advice indeed. Go back a year or so and take a look at the posts made when ATJ, Typhoid Harry, T4H, Yeti, Gloomy, Hein, Our Soul, (the list of lost boys is endless) were still posting regularly. Not always relevant, but genuine quality, witty, interesting contributions. I expect the offenders will react to this with indignance and start bleating about free speech. That's why it's sometimes necessary to adopt brutal tactics. So come on chaps, show a bit of respect for the good old Deathlist!

Not always relevant, but genuine quality, witty, interesting contributions. I expect the offenders will react to this with indignance and start bleating about free speech. That's why it's sometimes necessary to adopt brutal tactics. So come on chaps, show a bit of respect for the good old Deathlist! I understand your point of view NAP. I haven't put you on my ignore list like the other people who complain about this topic because you actually have intelligent points to make. I understand your point how Deathlist quality has gone down. I believe "quality" is intangible and subjective, but it's also like obscenity. A famous judge once said "I can't define pornography, but I know it when I see it." I feel the same way about degredation of quality. I see it too and, in part, I can acknowledge to contributing to it, although I don't feel like I'm the worst offender or the ultimate example. I enjoy this community because discussing and engaging myself with death helps me cope with it in real life. I never lost a family member until I was in my teens and my Aunt died, and I found it very difficult to cope with. But I decided to become educated (I took a Death, Dying and Loss course) and be more open with it to people who didn't feel it was so taboo. When my Grandfather died during my senior year of high school, I found myself much more able to handle it. He was only the first of four grandparents to pass on, however, and I know that in the years ahead, as much as I want to live in denial, I'm going to have to deal with it again. I joined this forum because its full of people who are open on the subject. As horrible as some people view us, I think many of us have our reasons for being here. Maybe we're wrong by breaking the taboo, maybe it doesn't matter. But the fact is we're here and we're like-minded. You probably don't care about all this, but I'm just trying to explain why Deathlist has become an everyday part of my life. I'd like to state an analogy with my life. When I joined Student Council, our council (there's seven on our capmus) was the best. It had the most money, the most dedicated people and threw the best concert. But it was also small, and most positions were unopposed or appointed. Yet still things were good, but we wanted to expand. So the last council put in a concentrated effot into getting people to join SCERC (that's the name of my council) so that we could expand and grow. With all the new people that have joined however, I've noticed a noticeable detriment in the quality of the council. People squabble needlessly all the time, act irrationaly, treat money like chimps treat feces. It's an unfortunate balancing act of life. We all want our organizations to grow, yet maintain their quality at the same time. Unfortunately, especially with an online public forum, this is almost impossible. Brutal repression won't solve anything. Ban me. Ban Phantom. Ban anyone that you think detracts from the quality of this site (by the way, nothing personal against you Phantom, just that your posts started SC's complaining). People like me will still join. People worse than me will still join. Unless you move to a completely private forum, you won't be able to control quality and expansion. I've been on private forums. They're fun for a while, but they get boring. I think you all know that better than me, you all voted to allow guests to post again. People on Student Council have a nostalgia for the times when it was simple, pure and enjoyable. But though those times are gone, we also acknowledge that bigger interest means bigger budget and better things we can do for our college. It's a give a take. I'm sure there are things we can do to control the quality of this site, but constant nagging, bitching, complaining, whining and flat out "brutal tactics" have failed thus far and, in themselves, only detract from the quality of the community itself. Perhaps we could adopt and pin some courtesy rules for posting on the site? I'd love to work with the mods and anyone else who's interested in formulating the rules so that there can be an agreement between Mods, the so called "good ol' boys" and problem children like myself. That's just my two cents. I hope I didn't bleat about freedom of speech too much.
Brinsworth House Baiter 12 Posted March 21, 2006 This whole thread is like, irony, right? My name is Brinsworth House Baiter & I am a recovering Post Whore. It is a wilting, debilitating disease, sometimes brought on by over-exuberance, having a fun time, but more often than not, by an overwhelming need to moan about other's posts & quality thereof. I have sought therapy, by choice as against having my warn meter filled & my stay in the Priory being enforced by Mods. I feel much better, but am left with the underwhelming feeling of confusion regarding when or not to post. I find myself spending so much time perplexing over the quality & merit of what I wish to say & whether it will appease 'the good ol' boys' that I find myself not bothering & seeking out other forums. No doubt that this is what they desire, but it is all rather like finding yourself eventually let in to a club by a churlish, begrudging doorman & having to spend the whole of the rest of the night desperately trying not to piss anyone off so that said doorman doesn't beat you up & throw you out. millwall32 114 Posted March 21, 2006 I am not, as far as I can tell, a post whore. I do agree with Canadian Paul that there has been a bit of a drop off in the standard of posting and that in turn the "better posters" are less inclined to post. Having said that we are suffering from what would appear to be a slow death year, many of the more "popular" figures that generate(d) a great deal of the postingsuch as the Pope or Thatcher are of no current interest to us, and the content of Paul's post is as engaging as anything I have ever read on DL. honez 79 Posted March 21, 2006 am left with the underwhelming feeling of confusion regarding when or not to post.Excellent. This means that you are actually thinking what you are going to post, not just typing the first thing that fires a synapse.I find myself spending so much time perplexing over the quality & merit of what I wish to say & whether it will appease 'the good ol' boys' that I find myself not bothering & seeking out other forums. What? You are worried that Mods and Admins might actually moderate or administrate the forum to try to keep things vaguely on track? What an odd concept that is.but it is all rather like finding yourself eventually let in to a club by a churlish, begrudging doormanWe let anyone post here, guests an' all. Hardly "eventually" being let into a private club by a bouncer barring the door to all and sundry.spend the whole of the rest of the night desperately trying not to piss anyone off so that said doorman doesn't beat you up & throw you out. That's the point. Half the fun of DL is pissing people off. As long as you do it articulately, with good humour and it's vaguely on-topic, then go for it. State your case whatever it may be and be prepared to defend it. That certainly never got anyone thrown out. On the other hand, rants, crap posts, political rants, spam, pettiness, hatefulness, etc. have been known to cause the admins to administer their powers.
