TLC 9 Posted March 21, 2006 It could be much worse. A forum for the GTA game that I used to use for a while had a topic entitled 'what are you listening to right now?' Hang on, let me check..... .....it's still there, has well over 600 pages and 12,000 posts. Some of it is literally a conversation between two random people taking turns to name the next song on the album they've got on! I hope this shows that there is a happy medium between agonising over every choice of word & syntax you use, and posting the first random nonsense that comes into your head. If you spend too long worrying, the topics become self-censored and stale. If you don't think enough, topics start along the lines of 'What's your favourite colour?' and people think that's fine. If you ask me, and I realise no-one was, this site is pretty good. There are rubbish posts of course (some mine) but plenty of people draw attention to them, mods & non-mods alike, and things usually calm down. And as far as I can tell, any censorship that there is on this site doesn't prevent an honest to goodness argument if needed i.e. much of this thread. By the way, Blue. No, Yellow! I thought it had been more or less agreed, or accepted, that the worthiness of a thread would be determined by whether people continue to post on it. The only reasons for deleting a thread should be if something is truly offensive (promoting Nazis, the KKK, Jeremy Beadle, etc.), if it's trying to plug a product or other website, or it's gibberish. I still don't get why, e.g., the Will Ferrell thread got whacked. Unlike most of the people mentioned on "Ideas and Possibilities", Will Ferrell is actually pretty famous, and there was a rumour circulating that he had died in a hang-gliding accident. Thus it had elements of both celebrity and death, i.e. the point of this site. The fact that it was an elaborate hoax actually made it more interesting. 2. It does seem there has been a bit too much time spent sniping at other people's posts as opposed to coming up with something new and original to say. If you're really bothered by a post, it would be helpful if you would state specifically why. Better yet, see if you can solve the issue by sending the person whose post concerns you a PM. My experience has been that a positively written, to the point personal message resolves the problem without unnecessarily embarrassing anyone. 3. Whomever made the point that we lose a bit of focus when there's less dying around is correct. But with three deaths before the end of March we're on pace for about 13 on the year, i.e. just one short of the record. And to improve next year's success and ergo give us some actual results to debate, always remember the most valuable contribution one can make to the DL is to send in info about a properly famous person with details of ill health or other misfortune which suggests their impending death (in the following calendar year). Or pictures of naked supermodels. But you can just PM those to me directly 4. It makes me smile when people write "that's it, I've never been so insulted, I'm off, goodbye cruel world", and then come back to the DL and post a few hours/days/weeks later. If the rest of us really want someone to go we'll just ban that person (and it takes pretty extreme circumstances for that to happen), otherwise, please take it from someone who has annoyed a few people and been the target of the odd posted bitch comment, it's all sticks and stones. A famous judge once said "I can't define pornography, but I know it when I see it." Quite. We can best define quality by looking at its opposite. We all want our organizations to grow, yet maintain their quality at the same time. Unfortunately, especially with an online public forum, this is almost impossible. Probably, but we are doing ourselves a grave (geddit?) disservice if we don't try. Brutal repression won't solve anything..... ....... Unless you move to a completely private forum, you won't be able to control quality and expansion. Aye, but we can all do our best to moderate them wisely. I'm sure there are things we can do to control the quality of this site, but constant nagging, bitching, complaining, whining and flat out "brutal tactics" have failed thus far and, in themselves, only detract from the quality of the community itself. No they haven't. We are rid of some of the worst posters ever, and a lot of others are taking a long hard look at themselves. It's not nice in the short term, but it's for the common good. Omlettes and eggs, you know. (there's a little bit of Maggie Thatcher in every moderator ) Perhaps we could adopt and pin some courtesy rules for posting on the site? That's just my two cents. I hope I didn't bleat about freedom of speech too much. No, not at all.
