Not just Doctor Who, but she famously casually defended the 1950s adaption of 1984 against parliament caution about the content. Or as Nigel Kneale put it (heavily paraphrased): "One day, MPs and the press hate it, the repeat performance is off. Yeah, it's been confirmed over the years by Kneale (in a BBC doc), various BFI historian types, and even Peter Cushing once (I think on one of his Wogan appearances, but don't quote me on that). As for her Who love, oft joked about, comes up in random anecdotes, confirmed in 2005 by The Mirror and later Russell T Davies. Gives an in-road into conversation should a meeting ever arise... According to that Mirror article you linked, "By tradition, broadcasters give members of the Royal family recordings of their favourite programmes before they are available in the shops on video or DVD." I wonder if she sees some things before they are broadcast on television, too. She'd know what happens in Dr Who before the rest of us. I think I've just gone off the royals again. At any rate, I think we can now definitely rule out the Queen dying this year now. If she is that big a Doctor Who fan, she is going to be determined to stick around to find out who replaces Capaldi. With rumours of the BBC casting a woman as the Doctor popping up periodically, I had a brainwave: Capaldi was a long time fan of the show => eventually was allowed to play the Doctor. Queen Elizabeth is a long time fan of the show => ... She'd make two television appearances at Christmas then: once to deliver her message and the other to do the regeneration scene. LOL - I had misread "companion" as "comparison" as in comparing Capaldi to Her Maj! I am very selective about the Who I like... I love the Hartnell historicals, but not his science fiction stories (too childish.) I like the Pertwee era as long as UNIT is nowhere to be seen. I like some of the latter McCoy episodes (Ghostlight, Survival, etc) and that's about it. Some of Colin Baker's stuff like Trial isn't as bad as it is made out to be but still isn't great. The one that frustrates me is the Peter Davison era. On paper, he is a great Doctor but the execution is dreadful, for which I mainly blame Saward. Many people claim he is the most "pacifist" o the classic Doctors but he ends up killing more than most people. The dreadful companions don't help his era either. As for new Who, I like it all but I feel the show only really hit its stride once Donna became the companion. I think I was put off a bit at first by the Doctor's constant bullying of Mickey. (What was that all about, anyway? He'd already stolen the guy's girlfriend off him and then he still treated him like a doormat.) Also Tennant's introduction was a bit weird, as though they hadn't thought his characterisation out: in Christmas Invasion he talks about not giving second chances yet he goes onto be one of the more compassionate doctors later on. Anyway, I think the show really hit its stride from the latter part of the Tennant era onwards. I seem to like Capaldi more than a lot of people too. Yes, Smith often misfires but when everything came together it was fairly magical. I tended to like the lighter approaches of the Christmas episodes like A Christmas Carol (the one with Katherine Jenkins) and The Snowmen, rather than the convolutions of the crack in time nonsense.
