Recommended Posts

Guest iain

A billionaire businessman who last year headed Scotland's rich list has just a few weeks to live because of terminal cancer, it has emerged.

Oil and gas magnate Paul van Vlissingen has returned home to his native Netherlands to die

Never heard of him.

Weeks to live....Anna Nicole had better get her skates on.

(It was she who married the elderly dying billionaire, wasn't it?)

Never heard of Paul van Vlissingen either, so I had to do a bit of research. He is very involved in wildlife conservation, manages a wildlife area in Scotland, and has several projects throughout Africa, according to this old article from 2003 and this other one.

He does not seem to be very well known outside of the Netherlands and Scotland, so he would not satisfy the DL famous enough category. If he does manage to survive this year, he would be an excellent ddp or hpd selection.

Doesn't even have his own Wikipedia page! How low on the "Not Famous Enough" scale can he go? :banghead:

Though admittedly, neither does Ernest Gallo. I wonder if that speaks less of him or Wikipedia?

Yep, I've heard the news about this chap already - he is the boss of Calor Gas - and with this cancer I've got him in my top twenty out of 662 names. Only thing is it now looks like he won't be around much longer.

Really? I reckon the death of a billionaire Scotsman, running amok in conservation areas, would be enough to get him an obit in a respected Brit paper. Isn't that the one-and-only DL famous enough category?

I peg him as one to monitor for 2007. Live, Paul, live!

Ditto. I read OoO's update in the Ideas/Possibilities/Names thread and thought momentarily that Captain Beefhart had died. :D

Is 16 weeks 'just a few'? Next to the 65 years he lived, probably. Next to our normal understanding of 'just a few' - as in the time Lou Rawles had on January 1st - probably not.

If I'm not mistaken this is Paul Fentener van Vlissingen (yes, he had a double-barreled family name), owner of SHV, a company much reviled in the Netherlands, at least by those with a leftish political bent. In the 80s several SHV's Makro shops were torched because that company had considerable investment in South-Africa. Eventually those investments were withdrawn.

regards,

Hein

He also had an obituary in the Daily Telegraph (A UK Gentlemens' newspaper).

As opposed to the Daily Sport, which is more of a UK Gentlemens' Interest newspaper, an important distinction.
