Been To Any Good Gigs Lately?

Been at the Cliffs Pavilion in Sarfend for Romesh Ranganathan. Loads of hip hop bangers from Martin2Smoove in the build up and during the interval were a really nice touch. As for the comedy, I’m privileged to have been to more stand up gigs than I can count; highlights include Bill, Jo, Dara, the late Sean Lock…I can honestly say I’ve never laughed harder and more frequently at any other show than I did at this one. Absolutely incredible.

This morning I was offered a free ticket to Romesh Ranganathan's show at the Edinburgh Playhouse. I remembered this positive review. I'm not as big of a comedy show person and I'm certainly not someone who goes "Ha Ha Ha Ha!" which makes me self-conscious, particularly in Edinburgh. It really was a laugh a minute or, for me, a sharp exhale every 10 seconds. Good show.

Glad you enjoyed! Romesh is the absolute tits, I've never seen the Cliffs as lively as when he was there so I can imagine he took the roof off in Edinburgh

Danny Brown at SWG3 (which is my haunt at this point). I didn't know I could sweat so much in a 60 minute hip-hop set. He must've rapped 15,000 words and didn't lip-sync or trip over a single bar.

There was a notable lack of fannies with bucket hats and bum bags, so the atmosphere was nice and safe for all. Danny is a 43-year-old recovering alcoholic (he went to rehab just last year), and seems to be really happy and healthy. Productive, too; he's working on another new album.

Let's also acknowledge his promo poster:

Forgot to mention attending a fun albeit 45 years in the making Stiff Little Fingers show on 9 May.  After the tepid mosh pit we had to sort the AARP cards lying on the ground.

But seriously it was a good time and glad I finally saw them. Didn’t know they were settled in Chicago the past few decades.

Took the wife to First Avenue in Minneapolis to see Echo and The Bunnymen last night. Solid performance.
I found it a bit concerning that Ian McCulloch needed a chair after just the first 3 songs and continued to drink throughout both sets which were only about 45 minutes long and was unstable walking off stage at the end of the first set.

It looks like you were close to the stage. I arrived that the gig in St Paul about an hour towards the end of their set since I had been at the Kay Bank Studios earlier and had to drive across town after that show.

Oh, you thought I was done for the week? This is Infinity Song, a band of brothers and sisters from NYC on their first European tour:

I first saw a clip of them on social media a few days ago and could tell they were talented immediately. Gorgeous as well which helps. Bless them, their tour dates are brutal. They're going to 6 countries in the next week. Their parents were escorted to the front, which got an aww from the crowd.

If you know Glasgow, G2 is the teeny totey room above The Garage. Smallest gig I've been to, and they used the intimacy to their advantage. Never did I think I would do the conga with a soft rock band:

I worked for Run Westy Run this past Saturday at The Green Room in Minneapolis. The Westies have been going for over 40 years. Guitarists Kirk Johnson and Terry Fisher, and lead vocalist Kirk Johnson are founding members. They' put on a solid 2 hour performance mostly featuring tracks from their recent albums with favorites from the oldies.

Going to see Pink tonight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. TFL are making it really easy for everyone to get there by shutting down White Hart Lane station and no bus routes. Meaning a fun half an hour walk to and from Seven Sisters.

Update - If any of you get the chance to see her. Go. She is an amazing performer. Not my video (I also had to leave right as the final fireworks started because had to walk half an hour to seven sisters):

I had the honor of working for Loudon Wainwright III and Wesley Stace this evening. It was the final night of their mini tour together. Both are in fine form. Wesley opened the evening with a varied set delving into his vast repertoire.

After the interval, Loudon regalled us was anecdotes and many a tune. They rounded off the evening by performing a duet.

Saw The Castaways yesterday.

Still going strong after 61 years.

Remaining founding member, Jim Donna on keyboards.

My only disappointment is that the only original tune they played was their hit, Liar Liar.

They had several singles that they recorded during the mid 60s. But never play the songs during their shows.

Forgot to post this on Saturday

Blues guitarist, Toronzo Cannon, was on tour via Minneapolis promoting the release of his 6th album "Shut Up & Play"!

Fine performance and all the band are really nice.

Another fucking ace night at Foo Fighters at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.  My seventh time of seeing them over 16 years.  It was fucking boiling.  We have the advantage of being only about a 90ish minute drive away, and my daughter’s friend lives about a 20 minute walk from the stadium so we take full advantage of her private parking space.  After a quick piss and snack we walked straight into the stadium, no queues, staff were fabulous, found unreserved seating right near the front so had an excellent view.  Support bands were Himalayas (meh), Wet Leg who we love after seeing them support Harry Styles at the same venue last year.  The Foo Fighters were as ever bloody loud and amazing, they did a three hour set, new drummer Josh Freese is a worthy successor to Taylor Hawkins - I’d vowed I would not see them again after Taylor died but I was wrong.  Taylor’s son Shane, who I think is only 17, came out to drum on This Is A Call, the balls of the kid are incredible, it must be difficult emotionally to do that but he’s a damn good drummer in his own right.   I always blub at gigs and this was no exception, due to dead grandad (who selfishly died while I was at a FF gig at the 02 in 2017) and grandson, a couple of songs always set me off.  No dramas getting out of the stadium and was back home by 1am.  My heavily pregnant kid coped well, just one complaint  - in 36 years of gigging, I have never been offered an upgrade to the very front of the pit in front of the stage (I was at the front for the Cheese and Grain tiny gig but that was through my own hard work steaming headlong through the tiny crowd) - until last night - and to ensure the health and safety of my coming granddaughter we had to decline the steward’s kind offer.  Fucking FUMING I am :D

Looking forward to FF8 whenever that might be.

To be honest, I’m so short that I probably wouldn’t have seen much, and I didn’t want to leave the kid alone too long (she is actually a grown woman of 27 years old but ya know) so we were happy to stick where we were.  But I will remind her, and my granddaughter when she is old enough, of that time it was their fault I missed being in the pit :D

As someone who is 5'1 and been in general admission concerts/gigs. As much fun as it is to feel the vibes of people next to you, I hardly see a thing due to people taller than me. Bane of my life.

Worked for The Scarlet Goodbye earlier this evening.

They played a split set of songs from their debut album "Hope's Eternal" and others from the forthcoming album " El Camino Adios " which will be out later this year

Loving how active this thread has been lately. Summer is here.

Went to see Dlù at SWG3 Warehouse (a room I'd never been to, capacity 500). Formed at the Glasgow Gaelic School, they're a Trad band with modern production. Dlùth means "close-knit" in Scottish Gaelic, and their brand new album is called "Close to".

I'll be honest, the reason I know them is because I worked with one of the members for 2 years and wanted to support one of my favourite ex-colleagues. I wouldn't have gone if it was naff though.

I'm going to a comedy show in September at the Hexagon in Reading. Comedian is the Youtuber Max Fosh. He's doing London at the Apollo but I don't want stress of London, and Hexagon is 20 minute train ride for me compared to London 50 minute not including dealing with the underground and rush for last train home.

Going on my own because none of my friends have heard of him.

Good for you. I wish I'd had the initiative to go to events on my own when I was younger.  There really is no need to miss out on something because nobody else is interested.

Hexagon is a decent little venue, they have a lot of comedy there and some good bands once in a while.
