Phantom 2,533 Posted November 28, 2006 Alan Freeman has died at the age of 79 Not the Fluff meister, NO, damn it to hell another DDP candidate slips through the net. I even dropped him from my list this year in the hope of including him next year. Oh well, that's the 9th one I had ready for next year to die in the past 6 weeks. Vinegar Tits 606 Posted November 28, 2006 Alan Freeman has died at the age of 79Farewell, pop picker He did look bloody awful in that recent Brinsworth House inmates pic though, didn't he? Definitely looked to be slipping down the charts. Sad as the news is, when I read it I thought: "Bugger, another possibility for 2007 gone". Then I remembered he was on my 2006 list so points it is, and Bod knows we need 'em at the mo.
Little baby tiger man 0 Posted November 28, 2006 Long time hanger on - 1st time poster. Fluff has bitten the dust. Liked the guy a lot - an old school DJ who could take the piss out of himself. Nice obit on the BBC.

Lard Bazaar 3,799 Posted November 28, 2006 Sad news. He reminds me of dull Sunday afternoons, when nothing was on the telly so we'd put the radio on and listen to Pick of the Pops. Another slice of childhood fades away.
Guest Guest Posted November 28, 2006 a great and legendary figure has passed on-please pay him due respects and not just discuss him like hes just another one of your 'hits'
Guest Guest Posted November 28, 2006 surely the former dj Alan Freeman merits a mention on this thread as he has just died aged 79?
Phantom 2,533 Posted November 28, 2006 surely the former dj Alan Freeman merits a mention on this thread as he has just died aged 79? I think there was a seperate thread that I forgot all about when I posted the link to the BBC site last night.

Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted November 28, 2006 Sadly he wasn't one of our 'hits', pop-pickers. "At the Sign of the Swinging Scythe" a great and legendary figure has passed on-please pay him due respects and not just discuss him like hes just another one of your 'hits'
Anubis the Jackal 77 Posted November 28, 2006 And another thing... I liked the silly old git when he was at Radio 1, and at least he had the intelligence to understand that he was too old and past-it for the R1 audience, unlike The 'Hairy Shitflake' Dave Lee Travis whose hilarious 'resignation' speech is available here (registration needed) The puffed-up old fart-knocker was going to be sacked a few days later anyway. I'm half asleep this morning and saw the post from the guest, then thought "where did my post go"?
Six 23 Posted November 28, 2006 Sad news. Just like Lord Bazaar said before me, Fluff's show was the focus of many a Sunday in my home. (Also, damnit. Another not on my list.)
maryportfuncity 10,647 Posted November 28, 2006 a great and legendary figure has passed on-please pay him due respects and not just discuss him like hes just another one of your 'hits' Oi, even when we respect them we can still partake in discussion of the inevitable catching up with them. Respect to 'Fluff' but - in the end - he was as human as everyone else, even the last pope.

Respect to 'Fluff' but - in the end - he was as human as everyone else, even the last pope. Even as human as that Bethlehem faker 2,000-odd years ago... But Fluff was obviously on his way out - if you remember that picture of Fluff with Dicky O in the Brinsworth thread a while back you could see he was falling apart. I've been wondering whether it will have any effect on the other inmates of HMP Brinsworth? And is Dicky O really ill enough to be in there?

Always had a lot of respect for Fluff, and Tony Blackburn for that matter, for not taking themselves too seriously and seeing the joke in Smashy and Nicey, unlike the aforementioned Hairy Cornflake and Simon Bates to name but two. maryportfuncity 10,647 Posted November 28, 2006 Ah DLT, a man whose Wiki page claims he is the only person to have been voted 'rear of the year' and 'pipe smoker of the year' presumably different years. I mean, if he had his arse to the audience nobody could get a good look at his pipe! 61 and still working for BBC local radio, apparently.

maryportfuncity 10,647 Posted June 5, 2007 Apparently there's a plaque unveiling at Brinsworth House on July 1st - can't source this yet, heard it from someone in the radio industry. It's in honour of the great 'Fluff,' could any of our readers close to Twickenham blag and/ro politely ask their way in to spy on the inmates?

Hmmm, 50 notes sounds a small price to pay to rub shoulders with the likes of Blackburn, Gibb, Pertwee and la Rue, not to mention sneaking off to Dicky's room for a large G&T. Lunch and a raffle too. I'm sorely tempted.
