Magere Hein 1,400 Posted January 1, 2010 Demjanjuk deserves to be left in peace for whatever time he has left. I remember when he was put on trial in Isriel and was set free. Now it just seems like Germany or Europe or whatever is just looking for a scapegoat. Obviously a sick old man is all they can handle. There are not many people left from that time who are not old or sick. As far as I know, illness or being old are, from themselves, no reasons to not put someone on trial. If the crime is trivial, these may well be good reasons, but we're discussing a suspect of mass murder and war crimes. By international legal rules, war crimes have no statute of limitation. Besides, he knows the truth about what he did or didn't do. That's true for all suspects. That was over 60 years ago. Let it go. Better yet, 60 years from now, how about some of the armed forces we have in Iraq and Afganistan be put on trial by those respective countries, and don't forget Vietnam, in 10 years or so let's let them take a few surviving 'nam vets and put them on trial for following orders. Ah, you touch a good point there. It doesn't seem likely Vietnam will cause much activity in this respect. Iraq and Afghanistan may prove to be different, although I doubt it. The scale of those wars is different and there are no clear winners and losers, as was the case in WWII. All that said: I sympathise with your sentiments. It's all rather pathetic. On the other hand: I sympathise more with the relatives of the victims of those suspected of these horrible crimes. I hate the thought of them getting away with it, if they're guilty. regards, Hein
Tomb raider 9 Posted January 1, 2010 Demjanjuk deserves to be left in peace for whatever time he has left. I remember when he was put on trial in Isriel and was set free. Oh yeah, before that, Korea needs a Korean war vet, even though it was just a "police action" not a war. None of your arguments make sense to me. 1. Why would Germany or Europe need a scapegoat for WW II? Don't you think that they have as much scapegoats for that as they'd possibly want? In fact: so many people have been held responsible - in court as well as in the public debate - that they could easily form a Scapegoat Trade Union for Fascist Fuckheads. 2. Germany is perfectly capable of handling any suspect, from penis-eating gay cannibals to the most gruesome child molesters. Stating that 'a sick old man is all they can handle' is ridiculous. 3. 'He knows the truth about what he did or didn't do' is hardly a valid argument in a trial. Even the nazi hotshots that were convicted in Nuremberg after the war declared themselves to be innocent. 4. It certainly was over 60 years ago. So what? We're not talking about a child nicking a candybar from the local grocery store, this man is suspected to be one of the worst mass murderers in the concentration camp Sobibor - an unprecedented crime for which he should be prosecuted up to the very gates of hell. 5. I agree that none of the veterans of Vietnam, Iraq or where-ever are likely to be prosecuted for war crimes sixty years later. Well, they probably should, don't you think? That some of the sadists who tortured civilians in Abu Graib never will stand trial is a disgrace, but has nothing to do with Demjanjuk. This trial is of course a little bit ironic for Demjanjuk, because the main reason that he is now brought to trial is that he's managed to live to a ripe old age. Many of his fellow camp guards have been dead for a long time without ever being held responsible for anything. Much more important nazi's than Demjanjuk have got away with it. That's a shame, but in my opinion it's no reason to let Demjanjuk run. If he's guilty, I hope he'll rot in jail for the rest of his miserable pathetic life. Ulitzer95 12,637 Posted January 14, 2010 Trial session cancelled - Demjanjuk "ill" Anybody else think that a sweepstake is in order? I doubt if he will die soon, but I pick the 9th of march nonetheless (just to make sure no one claims this date if there is a sweepstake) Good shout, I was afraid nobody would reply and I'd end up looking like a pratt. Well I think he is ill.... to an extent. Although he's clearly exaggerating a lot of the time. Might go for March 17th, quite random but that's my birthday so I guess it's a present of a sort.... okay now I just sound like a creep...

deadsox 894 Posted January 17, 2010 I do not believe that a sweepstakes would be in order. That should be reserved for candidates who are clearly at the end. Although Mr. Demjanjuk is a decent candidate, his ailment is one that can be lived with for a long time. You can also add the "on trial/imprisoned" factor that gives people a great reason to exaggerate illnesses. That being said, I love a competition, so I'll go for July 23, 2012. (Who will be keeping track of this anyway?)

N. Fritz 49 Posted March 17, 2012 Unless he is our infamous troll, I'm going to guess that Guest_Jerry was simply excited to have been able to read the first post re: Demjanjuk's death which was posted in German. I get overly excited that way sometimes when all the foreign languages I've learned come in handy - like translating signs and menus for non-German speaking tourists or translating Latin inscriptions!
