maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted April 11, 2010 47 year old Evander Holyfield is a world champion again. Not exactly demonstrating perfect diction in his speech these days but still insists he can unify the world titles.
VSBfromH 74 Posted April 18, 2010 Former WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero, lined up as the next opponent for Manny Pacquiao, may not be able to fulfil that engagement as it would appear he's murdered his wife
Spade_Cooley 9,527 Posted April 19, 2010 I'd say he'll almost definitely be unable to fulfil that obligation, as he's hung himself.
Spade_Cooley 9,527 Posted September 23, 2010 Mainly because I just found this list of oldest living world champions for each weight decision, plus I've been here like nine months and not started one of these "all purpose dying dude round-up" threads. Heavyweight ........68...Muhammad Ali (Jan 1942) Cruiserweight........58...Marvin Camel (Dec 1951) Light Heavy .........82... Harold Johnson (1928) Supermiddle..........57...Fulgencio Obelmejias (1953) Middleweight ........89... Jake Lamotta (1921) Jr Middleweight... ..72...Nino Benvenuti (1938) Welterweight ........83... Carmen Basilio (April 1927) Junior Welter ........73... Eddie Perkins (Mar 1937) Lightweight ..........74... Carlos Ortiz (Sep 1936) Jr Lightweight .......77... Harold Gomes (1933) Featherweight ......74... Eder Jofre (1936) Bantamweight .......74... Jose Becerra (May 1936) Flyweight .............76... Horacio Accavallo (1934) Lt Flyweight...........72...Luis "Lumumba" Estaba (Aug 1938) Straweight.............47...Leo Gamez (Aug 1963) Also still around and of note: David Kui Kong Young is 93, Jimmy Bivins is 90 and former two-division world champion Emile Griffith, while only 72, is in a nursing home with pugilistic dementia, having never been in the greatest health since being assault leaving a gay bar in 1991. He's most famous for killing his opponent Benny Paret in a 1962 weltweight title fight after Paret referred to him as a "maricon", or "faggot", during the weigh-in. maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted September 24, 2010 Good call Spade, I can see some action on this thread. Strikes me that for the oldest survivors a few of these guys - notably Ali - are surprisingly young. As a comparison with another dangerous sport one of the F1 champions from the 1950s is still alive; Jack Brabham (b. 1926).
maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted October 12, 2010 Heard today that George Cooper - identical twin brother of Henry - died a few months ago. Don't recall seeing a post here. George was arguably the better boxer in the early days but injury stalled his career after which - as an identical twin - he was further held back because he was the same weight as Henry and prevented by the rules of boxing's governing bodies from fighting his own brother for titles. DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted March 3, 2011 Showtime commentator and former CNN journalist Nick Charles is battling stage 4 bladder cancer. Won't be long now.... By Christmas of 2010, he knew that the fight was over. The doctors said that one more terrifying round of chemo offered a small chance to extend his life by a couple of months. Charles said no. Grim Reaper 186 Posted May 2, 2011 How cruel and unjust. He properly hurts Muhammad Ali but then, after a controversial corner incident, goes on to be beaten with a shocking cut. Forced to sell his Lonsdale belts after being caught up in the Lloyds of London crash. And now in his death, the lead story on the UK news is ripped from him after just a few hours when a super villain is taken out. Poor old Henry Cooper - RIP. Spade_Cooley 9,527 Posted May 2, 2011 Cooper's death is on the front page of every UK newspaper this morning except the Guardian and the Independent. Why does the left hate Britain so much?
