themaninblack 2,112 Posted October 1, 2007 4-time Olympic Discus champion Al Oerter has died aged 71. Just two days after another 1968 Olympic men's field event champion, Hungarian hammer thrower Gyula Zsivótzky. Interesting.....I was about to posit a theory about athletes who competed at the high altitude of Mexico City in 1968. Peter Norman, Silver Medalist in the 200m, died a year ago. The only other I know for sure that had heart problems as a result of taking part in those games was Australian distance runner Ron Clarke...
maryportfuncity 10,017 Posted October 1, 2007 Clarke is still alive and serving in public office - aged 70 - though, isn't he? I know he collapsed during the 10,000m final in Mexico but he went on running for a couple of years and - I think - took a bronze medal at the next Commonwealth Games. DevonDeathTrip 2,290 Posted January 5, 2008 Former Olympic gold medalist figure skater, Dorothy Hamill, is suffering from breast cancer. Talking of the Olympics and cancer....this one's a bit dodgy but I'm sure MPFC will snap him up... Rob Daley the father of young diving sensation Tom Daley, who is set to compete in the Olympics this year at the age of 13, is suffering from a malignant brain tumour. If Amir Kahn's father was to drop dead, it would certainly be mentioned in the press, so I think Rob Daley would get the same treatment, especially if his son does well. TAFKAG 70 Posted March 10, 2008 Only five months to go before the next drug-infested farce celebration of the beauty of sport, so here's an Olympic Report: He'll be there. He might be there. She won't be there. And the rest may yet wish they weren't. Goodnight. <shuffles papers>
TAFKAG 70 Posted August 6, 2008 The plucky British duo of Tarquin and Imogen have started well in the Synchronised Protestathlon by winning the Banner-Raising. Next up is the Waterboarding, followed by the Five Years in a Rat-Infested Cell. C'MON GB!!!
Cowboy Ronnie 77 Posted August 6, 2008 The plucky British duo of Tarquin and Imogen have started well in the Synchronised Protestathlon by winning the Banner-Raising. Next up is the Waterboarding, followed by the Five Years in a Rat-Infested Cell. C'MON GB!!! Too bad it was so smoggy no one could see the banner. The guy looks like he's probably had his face smashed in a few hundred times at school. A total to which the Chinese authorities will be adding shortly. And how annoying is it when people spell their name "Iain" with two "i's"? Christ, you've already got two vowels in there, do you really need a third, and to confuse every one about the pronunciation. I'm on China's side in this one. themaninblack 2,112 Posted August 8, 2008 Yes....It is a repressive one-part-state regime Yes....Tibet deserves recognition But...this is China's big moment in the sun, why should it be spoiled by a load of mean-spirited posh tits? Funny how there wasn't a whiff of protest or at least something regarding the Iraq War in the last Olympics...

TAFKAG 70 Posted August 9, 2008 Didn't take long, although this unfortunate chap was just (hoping to be) a spectator. He was the CEO of company called Bachman's and the father of an ex-Olympic volleyball player. Another dad (and coach) of an ex-Olympian, Peter Coe, has also died. honez 79 Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/col...&id=3529125 US Men's swim team beats trash talking Frenchmen. My god, I've never read such sycophantic puffery in my life. Surely, this is a joke isn't it? With every powerful pull ... Lezak gained inches."I was pounding ... saying the f-word," admitted second-leg swimmer Garrett Weber-Gale. "I was saying, 'Come on!' It was an amazing thing to watch. I was saying to myself, 'If anybody in the world can pull this off, it's Jason.'" Phelps was screaming like a madman, his face contorting and muscles straining In the final stroke, Lezak pulled it off. He thrust his right arm ... and his relay teammates both exploded." "As you could see, I was pretty excited," Phelps said. "I was very emotional." Lezak was howling through the fatigue. "We were all so excited," he said. "We were just yelling at each other." The Miser 17 Posted August 13, 2008 Why aren't the British better swimmers? I also find it troubling that China insists that there gymnists are taken away from there family at 3 years old. I know former US gymnists that start at 10 and they are f-ed up enough.

DevonDeathTrip 2,290 Posted August 14, 2008 I was listening to Radio 5 in the middle of the night, as you do, when I heard an interview with Dick Fosbury, he of the eponymous flop. He mentioned that he'd been treated for lymphoma and had a tumour on his spine removed a while ago. He sounded very hale and hearty, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. honez 79 Posted August 20, 2008 All this British success is really getting on our Commonweath cousins' tits. So honez, are you a whingeing Aussie or does the old dual nationality see you celebrating 27 golds so far? Or do you not give a flying f**k either way? I don't begrudge anyone their medals. Well done to all I say. This nationalistic total medal haul thing has always struck me as being stupid anyway. Who cares if some nation picked up ten golds for tiddlywinks, synchronised swimming and shotgunning clay UFOs? Those don't hold a candle to a gold in the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles, etc. as far as I'm concerned. I applaud the athletes (note: this does not necessarily include tiddlywinkers or equivalent), swimmers, etc that have achieved the best they can do, regardless of medal status. I believe for something to be considered a valid Olympic event it has to be specifically measurable, that is; first past the post, thrown further, jumping higher, etc. Anything subjective (that gets a difficulty rating or artistic merit for example) should be booted.
