Summer Olympic Deaths/Dead Medallists

Grete Waitz

One of the greatest female marathon runners of all time dead from cancer at 57. Great shame.

That's a shame, I saw her win the London Marathon back in '86. My dad and I were there to give support to one of his co-workers who finished the race in a little over 2.5 hours

She was discussed here a few years ago. She never revealed what sort of cancer she was suffering from, so it was always hard to ascertain if she'd make a good DDP pick or not.

Things are looking bleak for the former Olympian Elvis Gordon, who represented the UK at judo and was also the Commonwealth and European champion.

A unique pick for the Living End...

Who would have guessed.

RIP. :skill2:

He's made the Wolverhampton Express and Star, you've just gotta see if he can crack the nationals now...

Elvis G didn't make my DDP cut because I was worried about the obit chances. All blogs, specialist sites and local press so far. Nationals not exactly short of material at the moment. BBC Sport might go with it though. Good luck TLE.

Independent obituary for Elvis Gordon. (scroll to bottom of page)

From what I've read about him, he was a very well liked and respected man. Unusually, no one seemed to have a bad word to say about him. Apparently he was a nightclub doorman as well as a judo champ, a job I can only imagine he excelled at. Nice youtube tribute to him

, he didn't half move quickly for someone who was 23 stone. :skill2:

Do you want the trophy now, or shall I wait until January? :(

I think mathematically, I've already lost my title. :(

What a useless performance (worse than West Ham), but well done DDT on another inspired hit...

I think in future years we'll talk about The Living End 2011 in the same way we talk about Brazil 1970 or AC Milan 1994 or the first year of Johnny Vaughan and Denise van Outen on the Big Breakfast.

Indeed, and let us not forget his self-effacing qualities. On winning the Deathrace DDT insisted his 'prize' was delivered in the form of a donation to a cancer charity. BIG RESPECT on having the balls to go with Gordon. In the very like event that he storms the DDP this year, this would be a worthy win.

I've never been a great fan of weightlifting, but Alekseyev was so dominant in the sport in the 70s that his feats will live long in my memory.

(7:05-7:25 - they must have been playing it adagietto)

That, or a commentary in Spanish was inserted to stretch it.

The 1972 Olympics were the first I remember watching on the box. Mark Spitz! How's he doing? Not so well, apparently.

In on topic news: Dutch athlete Xenia Stad-de Jong, who won gold in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1948 Summer Olympics, died 3 April, aged 90, according to Wikipedia.

regards,

Hein
