Recently I’ve become a real fan of Kamasi Washington if anyone knows of him. Fantastic album he put out recently. 3 hours long and full of pure beauty

Tried to get tickets to go to a concert of his but I wasn’t let in because of my bee features

So that rules out the possibility of seeing Thundercat too I guess.

French jazz violinist Didier Lockwood, whose eclectic career spanned more than four decades and the world’s most prestigious festivals and concert halls, has died. He was 62.

Lockwood died suddenly Sunday (Feb. 17), a day after he performed in Paris.

A big death. He was emarginated by the generally considered liberal Jazz scene because of his not-so-clearly-declared homosexuality.

emarginated
   :scratchhead:

Of course it's the news source from Turkey who is first on the Cecil Taylor obit scene.  So typical....

Cheers, enough there to add him to the round up.

QO's another matter....

He got a mention in the Telegraph two years ago. That said, I still say it's tough for him, as many jazz musicians aren't receiving an obit as of late (Cecil Taylor being the exception at the moment).

That’s really a sad one, not just cuz I constantly short listed him on age only so he always got pushed aside, but he did all the Schoolhouse Rock material and if that isn’t a lock cinch QO your country can (Interjection!).

im really sorry to hear the loss off Mr Dorough.

Reggie Lucas, dead at 65:

https://pitchfork.com/news/reggie-lucas-madonna-producer-and-songwriter-dead-at-65/

The headline focuses on his production work for Madonna (he wrote Borderline), but for me, he's more important as part of Electric Miles:

He's on the electric guitar.

I haven't made a list in quite a while so here it comes:

The surviving band members of Miles Davis (sort of reduced to the more important ones):

From the first great quintet (Kind of Blue, Round Midnight):

Jimmy Cobb - drummer (born 1929) - as last surviving member of the Kind of Blue band a very likely obit.

From the second great quintet (they will all obit):

Herbie Hancock - piano (born 1940) - a big star in his own right, but looks like he won't die for another 20 years.

Wayne Shorter - saxophone (born 1933) - also a composer, and co-founder of Weather Report

Ron Carter - bass (born 1937) - "most recorded jazz-bassist in history"

Electric Miles - part I (In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew):

Chick Corea - keyboard (born 1941) - also still a big star, and producing own records, like Hancock

Bennie Maupin - saxophone/clarinet (born 1940) - his obit isn't safe

John McLaughlin - electric guitar (born 1942) - founder of the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the biggest living name in what is generally refered to as "fusion"

Dave Holland - bass (born 1946) - not as notable as the others.. but english

Jack De Johnette - drums (born 1942) - still active, still making his own records, obitable

Electric Miles - part II (the weird noise stuff above)

Dave Liebman - clarinet/saxophone (born 1946) - this is where the personnel stops being "the greats" and starts being more insider-y. Liebman was the only white guy in this very black group.

Sonny Fortune - saxophone (born 1939)

James Mtume - piano/guitar/everything (born 1946) - very likely obit

Al Foster - drums (born 1944) - about as obitable as Sonny Fortune , wouldn't bet on it

Michael Henderson - bass guitar (born 1951) - solid musician who got around

Other notables

Keith Jarrett - piano (born 1945) was in Miles' band for a year or so - the biggest jazz pianist alive and a definite obit

Betty Davis - singer (born 1945) - Second wife of Miles for only a year, but she showed him electric music (like Jimi Hendrix). Also, she's a cult funk star in her own right. And made the hardest, sexiest funk that exists on this planet.

Reggie Lucas dies at 65 - Played with Miles Davis; Wrote and produced songs for Madonna, Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls and others; and had funk hit with Mtume called Juicy Fruit

"As an 18-year-old guitarist in New York City, Lucas was recruited to join Miles Davis' band in 1972. "It was real simple," Lucas told The Fader of his audition. "Miles said,'You wanna be in my band, motherfucker?' And I immediately said yeah.""

Easily going to be one of the most memorable quotes from an obit Ill read this year.
