Candido Camero (b. 1921)

As already noted, Camero is dead, which leaves Ray Anthony as the oldest living jazz great.

1. Assumes Bitchin Camero was a jazz great.

2. Assumes drol in charge of list of jazz greats and Anthony is the oldest.  Anyone older isn’t great.

List updated. Kudos to anyone who can find out what happened to Bill Graham. Can't find anything recent on this guy.

Turns out jazz musician Bill Graham (wiki), b. 8th September 1918, died on 29th December 1975.

Somebody added a FindAGrave memorial for him just two months ago. It checks out. Here is the official death record on Ancestry.

Mentioning because he's been picked in the DDP in the past and was recently discussed on @chilean way's centenarian deadpool.

Make of this what you will, but there's a report here that the last surviving member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Eugene Wright, has plucked his last bass string:

One for the Singles Thread too @Ulitzer95 if it turns out to be reported true.

DDP pick anaw.

A pick for @Phantom in last year's DDP, brass and reed instrumentalist Howard Johnson, reportedly dead: https://www.facebook.com/hojotuba/posts/4131693800191601

Led the Saturday Night Live band for a while. Of more importance to me, appeared on John Lennon's Walls And Bridges and Double Fantasy albums.

Jazz musician Howard Johnson, who worked with artists ranging from John Lennon to Miles Davis and was a member of TV’s “Saturday Night Live” house band during the ’70s, died today at age 79.  Johnson, a Montgomery (AL) native, died after “a long illness.”

A self-taught musician, Johnson was known for his prowess on tuba and baritone sax. He was also skilled on other instruments, like flugelhorn, bass clarinet, cornet and penny whistle.   He went on to record with jazz luminaries like Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus. He played on “Miles & Quincy Live: at Montreux,” Davis’ collaboration with conductor/producer Quincy Jones.

Johnson teamed up with Canadian folk-rock musicians The Band on “The Last Waltz,” widely considered to be one of the best concert films ever. Johnson also worked on two Lennon albums: “Walls and Bridges” and “Double Fantasy,” the last studio album the legendary Beatle released before his 1980 murder.

Other Johnson credits include bluesman Muddy Waters on “The Muddy Waters Woodstock Album,” fusion bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius’ solo debut LP and early classics by eclectic roots musician Taj Mahal, and R&B singer Chaka Khan, too.
