The Subtle Art Of Posting

Recommended Posts

What is a healthy level of posting? Two or three posts a day? Six or seven? More? Once a week? As a regular poster I find I am becoming reluctant to post at every opportunity and wonder if this self-imposed posting restraint is becoming a common feature for others. I hate being at the top of the posting list for any one day.

In fact I have tried deathlisting cold turkey once or twice but cannot break the habit. I suspect others have done so too, some successfully (or not, depending on whether one considers deathlisting as healthy or corrupting).

The thing is, if we all show commendable restraint then there will be nothing to read but the posts of those who don't. Now if those who post regularly are always entertaining, that's all well and good but there seems to have been a bout of quite dull posting recently and maybe I'm a contributor. I would never exclude myself.

I wonder if posts should be rationed, rather like the challenges to decisions at Wimbledon? Or perhaps posts could be rated with a guillotine for those who post too many unrated posts?

Anyway I would welcome some tips or advice on good posting practice.

The more the merrier I say. The only thing worse than a bad post is no posts at all, and when there's nothing but tumbleweeds blowing through the DL saloon, it can seem a cold and lonely place. Especially welcome are off topic items, like an interesting news article, a film review, a joke, or a funny clip off youtube. Who cares if it's got nothing to do with death.

This line of thinking is why I voted not to ban Banshees. Sure, I may not agree with much of what he says, and some of his alleged PM'ing of members doesn't sound too great, but it's fun to have him around. Depending on your definition of fun. I have a bet with myself about how many more versions of his personality he has left to go through.

I concur wholeheartedly with my esteemed colleague CR.

Then again, what would you expect me to say? The problem with one rule for all is that it takes no account of why we all post. Some people dip in like they attend the odd cricket match, as a diversion. For some of the rest of us it's a case of: 'this work is stressing me out, I'll relax with the DL.' Since being appointed bishop of Carlisle I've found this place a welcome diversion from endless admin and those idiots blathering on about women bishops being the daughters of Satan.

Post when you have something to say and don't when you don't, that's my motto at least. I haven't checked "top posters" in months. If I feel like posting something I say "will anyone care? Is this something that I need to say maybe just for myself?" If the answer is no to both of those questions, then I refrain. Otherwise, I post and don't really give a damn what anyone else thinks about it. Sometimes that's 5 in a day, sometimes I don't post that many in a week. When I was over thinking these things, it just made me feel like crap and made this whole forum no fun. No one here has got a 100% top post quality level, so who cares?

I feel that there should be no hard and fast rules about it - if you want to post, go ahead. I am fully aware that the majority of my posts are neither rivetting nor particularly informative, but I don't really care, I'm a member of the forum and as such I will post as and when - if you're not hurting anyone else, why not post when you like? I like reading everyone's posts (even if I don't necessarily agree with them), and there is a vast array of knowledge about a massive range of subjects here, I think it would be quite dull if posts were limited. Go with the flow, I say!

I enjoy this forum very much. My initial reason for joining was to get up-to-date death rumors and information for my Death League. I since have found that there are many funny and interesting topics and opinions that are not concerned with death but that are worth reading and/or commenting on. As an American, I have learned a great deal about European (especially British) culture and attitudes that I would not have known otherwise. As some of you know, I also enjoy a good argument with people who don't get outraged that someone thinks differently. All in all, posters should keep posting whenever the spirit moves them. You can always ignore what you don't find interesting or entertaining and enjoy the rest.

I used to get grief for posting too much drivel.

Now I get grief for posting occasional drivel.

When I don't post, I get grief for that too.

What have I learned? People either like you or don't. Changing your posting behaviour won't make a difference.

Deadsox, I believe you are a unique US specimen....knowing Britain is in Europe??? Bravo. ;) If they still run Jeopardy over the pond, I reckon you'd be a shoe-in for the dosh.

I apologise if the above sounds ironic, I assure you this is not aimed at you specifically.

I agree wholeheartedly with that Windy.

I try to keep up with this board but a while back I reached the stage where it really wasn't worth it. After a long absence I find myself checking in again. There is a lot to catch up with so I'll see if anything has changed.

Speaking of posting, let's celebrate the fact that freedom of speech is still fairly well upheld on here, it takes monumental abuse of the privelage to get you offed for good.

Meanwhile, several football message boards today are tearing down all references to this story about the Scottish police inadvertantly causing offence to Halibuts by failing to appreciate the symbolism in a picture. Since the link posted above is to the Daily Mail, it suggests online footy forums are more inhibhited that a famously reactionary UK national paper.

No apology necessary and no offense taken Terminator, old boy. And by the way, it's "shoo in" (a contestant or candidate who seems certain of winning) or is that just one of your quaint British spellings?

I'm sure you are right deadsox, it is 'shoo in', I think the same phrase was mentioned recently in another post (and spelt shoe) and I thought the same thing.

A race horse so fast that you can merely shoo it across the finish line rather than having to urge it on with stronger measures is a “shoo-in”: an easy winner. It is particularly unfortunate when this expression is misspelled “shoe-in” because to “shoehorn” something in is to squeeze it in with great difficulty.

And I also know what's in Europe but I could be a cheat since I was part of the horrible invading American army back in the 70s.

Enough already, I'll cop for being one of the idiot illiterate English posters posting the odd 'shoe in.' I stand corrected and will take on board the fine phrase and its historic origins, or summat.

I also thought it was shoe in, never had a reason to post it here though. Got in a little trouble over "onus" versus "oweness" though... :skull:

The latter is a good example of DL discussion - someone makes a verbal mistake, someone else corrects it, then we get post after post of analysis/comment/analysis comment until we come out at the end thoroughly briefed and unlikely to make the mistake again. I tell you this place is an education.

Thank you Godot, for that nostalgic moment.

Yeah, what happened to Josco? Has he gone to join the grown ups? I miss the little bean man. I liked his avatar too.
