Guest Guest Posted December 18, 2011 Big news.he was like Europes Mandela for a time.Plus he was on the deathlist at one time .Shame it wasn't this year of course
Youth in Asia 1,088 Posted December 18, 2011 A rare event has occurred. I have him as a unique pick on DDP. I've ony ever achieved that once before and that was with a non-famous person that I had inside knowledge of. To manage it with someone as famous as Havel is truly remarkable and I am humbled by my own perspicacity. I saw him 4 times when I was in Eastern Europe in the early 90s, first time on 29/12/89 when he made his Presidential inauguration speech . His personal life was interesting too. A lover of his aborted what would have been his only child in the 70s I think, he was married for a long time to Olga who then died of cancer, and he then got married to Dagmar who was the Czech actress who had appeared in films topless/nude several times. She had nabbed him while Olga was dying, so the gossip goes, and she was considered as a bit of a Chav by Czech society (a bit like if Prince Charles got married to Jordan). While he came from a very rich family (which owned the Czech equivalent of the London Palladium) most property was confiscated and the family only got it back in the 90s. Guest Guest Posted December 18, 2011 Incidentally his death means that only 2 people from the 1999 list are still alive (carly Simon and Nick Leeson). Does anyone happen to know if there are any lists where everyones dead yet?

Well done, but it's not quite a coincidence: Let's have a look at mr Havel's DDP history: Year Picks Teams Percentage 1996 ? 19 1997 ? 20 1998 0 31 0.00 1999 ? 27 2000 4 33 12.12 2001 5 32 15.63 2002 9 40 22.50 2003 5 24 20.83 2004 4 43 9.30 2005 5 124 4.03 2006 5 229 2.18 2007 2 421 0.48 2008 2 463 0.43 2009 3 480 0.63 2010 2 480 0.42 2011 1 477 0.21 From this table we can glean that after a record share of 22.5 percent of all teams, mr Havel has gently slipped under the DDP radar. Considering that your team picked him for the last few years, I would expect the same would have happened should he have lived to 2012. I'm sure similar trends can be spotted for other DDP picks, but I can't be arsed to check. regards, Hein

Youth in Asia 1,088 Posted December 18, 2011 Interesting analysis but actually I would have picked him next year, mainly for personal reasons. But I'm surprised someone as famous as him could slip under the radar with his perilous health.
Youth in Asia 1,088 Posted December 18, 2011 Thanks MiB - can't wait! Outside chance of another top 30 finish thanks to Hitchens and Havel. Edit: damn you Kim Jong Il

Ik denk dat Zijn 's hoog tijd om te hebben een vaste draad voor andere talen dan Engels. About that text: it shows nicely that machine translations are far from perfect. Corrected for spelling and grammar it would be like: Sorry, maar dat is niet vriendelijk. Ik denk dat het hoog tijd is een vaste draad voor andere talen dan Engels te hebben. I would also use different words. Anyway, I now doubt the quality of my sentence. Does any member here speak Hungarian? About the message: It's an interesting suggestion. There's no unwritten rule that English is the only language permitted here. I doubt many members have language skills in Foreign, though. regards, Hein
