rockhopper penguin 2,265 Posted July 14, 2015 And we should not let the day pass without remembering it has been 50 years since the passing of Adlai Stevenson aged 65. Some said the Democrats were foolish to run a liberal against Eisenhower in '52 but they went with Adlai and he got trounced. In '56 even more said the Democrats would be even more foolish if they went with a liberal, but they went with Adlai again and got trounced even harder. Learning their lesson in 1960 they went for charisma (along with ballot rigging in Chicago of course - allegedly).
msc 18,436 Posted July 14, 2015 Adlai Stevenson was once giving a speech on the campaign trail, and after it, a man in the audience leant forward and shouted: "You'll have the vote of every right thinking man in the country, Adlai!" Quick as a flash, Stevenson replied "Thanks, but I need a majority to win."
