Today in 1784 Dutch political writer and liberal revolutionary Joan van der Capellen tot den Pol died, aged 42.

450px-Johan_Derk_van_der_Capellen_heer_v

His first achievement was the abolition of conscript labour farmers in his province of Overijssel had to perform, a relic of feudal socage. His anonymously published pamphlet Aan het Volk van Nederland ("To the People of the Netherlands") is one of the most important early writing for democracy in the Netherlands, influential to this day.

Dutch historian Jan Romein devoted one chapter of his Erflaters van onze beschaving, a biographical who is who of 36 Dutch men and women from 1320 to 1930, to Van der Capellen.

On June 8th 1845 - the 7th president of the US, Andrew Jackson, died aged 78.

410px-Ralph_Eleaser_Whiteside_Earl_-_And

He was a lot harder than he looks btw, he was a general or something, plus he once killed a guy in one of those old-timey pistol duels. Presumably the duel was called because the guy made fun of him for looking like Peter Cushing.

Oh also, apparently some guy named Muhammad died on this day in 632. Never heard of him but ....... har-har anyway!

As a measure of how inexplicable it was, we all completely missed the first anniversary of Rik Mayall's death on 9th June...

Note the fences to keep people in.

Anyway, Rik Mayall was perfectly explicable. It was Tony Blair's fault. I was gonna post his death on here but my feelings was hurt on the subject, cause I remembered... if you look up the relevant thread I offered to explain why but no-one was interested. :smiley_f:
