time 8,618 Posted March 6, 2017 Nelson Eddy wasn't calling anyone after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage whilst perfoming on stage and dying a few hours later, 50 years ago. As well as leaving a legacy of a multitude of films (notably starring alongside Jeanette MacDonald 8 times) TV and music recordings, his name lives on in the pantheon of cockney rhyming slang.

Spade_Cooley 9,538 Posted March 6, 2017 Four years since Stompin' Tom Connors died. Fascinating character, effectively retired from music aged 38 in protest at the Canadian government not investing enough in its own country's artists and was particularly scathing of "turncoat" musicians who left Canada to perform in the US. Was ranked #13 in the 2004 The Greatest Canadian public ballot. Refused to take off his trademark stetson hat when meeting the Queen, and I quote Wikipedia "Buckingham Palace smoothed the way by likening Mr. Connors's hat to a religious headdress such as a nun's habit or a Sikh's turban". time 8,618 Posted March 7, 2017 Former French Prime Minister Aristide Briand died 75 years ago, aged soixente-neuf. He served 11 terms as PM, was Nobel Peace Prize co-laureate in 1926, and wore an impressive moustache. In 1929, when Foreign Minister, he proposed to the League of Nations the formation of a Federal European Union*, to co-ordinate economic and political policies. Little progress was made as Europe divided into two camps during the thirties, but, post WWII, his ideas were revisited, leading to the EEC and ultimately, the European Union. *The link leads to a French language document
