Sir Creep 7,070 Posted September 13, 2018 George Wallace, 1960's Presidential wannabee when not busy with all his racist activities, 20 years ago (79). Also need to mention Marcellinus of Carthage (1605 years ago) -- a Christian martyr and saint who was secretary of state of the Western Roman Empire under Roman emperor Honorius and a close friend of Augustine of Hippo, as well as a correspondent of Saint Jerome's. Saint Augustine dedicated the first books of his landmark The City of God to Marcellinus in 413. I need to mention cuz I am sitting in Carthage.....Texas. Interestingly the city of Carthage, TX (founded 1847) was not named for the ancient Tunisian city, but rather for Carthage, MS, from whence a founder of the Texas city was born. So you would think the Mississippi version was named after the ancient Tunisian city -- but you would think wrongly. Carthage, MS (est. 1834) was named after Carthage, Tennessee (birthplace of Al Gores Sr/Jr), again because one of the city founders was from there. The origin of Carthage, TN (settled 1789, incorp 1804) is unknown but I will safely assume it was named after the Tunisian city. For those who may not know, we States who are United have a fair number of Carthage towns, with the Missouri version being the largest and most recognizable (pop. 14500). If someone says they are from Carthage you would assume Missouri without further info. Carthage, MO was in fact named after the ancient city of Carthage.
