Mel Blanc, the man of 1000 voices, died on July 10, 1989.

In the UK this was reported on the same day that Laurence Olivier died (July 11th) so it lost a bit of impact.

And we should not let the day pass without remembering it has been 50 years since the passing of Adlai Stevenson aged 65. Some said the Democrats were foolish to run a liberal against Eisenhower in '52 but they went with Adlai and he got trounced. In '56 even more said the Democrats would be even more foolish if they went with a liberal, but they went with Adlai again and got trounced even harder. Learning their lesson in 1960 they went for charisma (along with ballot rigging in Chicago of course - allegedly).

Adlai Stevenson was once giving a speech on the campaign trail, and after it, a man in the audience leant forward and shouted: "You'll have the vote of every right thinking man in the country, Adlai!" Quick as a flash, Stevenson replied "Thanks, but I need a majority to win."
