The still unidentified Isdal Woman was found dead on this date 46 years ago.

It's so obtuse this may be my favourite post this year. Top 5 for sure.

SC

It's a fairly well known case, not to Somerton Man levels, but famous enough.

115 years ago today the greater amakihi was spotted for the last time.

435 years ago, Ralph Sherwin, Edmund Campion and Alexander Briant were executed for treason;

they were all Roman Catholic priests practicing in Queen Elizabeth's Anglican England who refused to convert.

All were canonised in 1970 by Pope Paul VI.

sherwin.jpgSt%2BEdmund%2BCampion.jpgBriant_cropped.jpg?itok=Wk7OOpCJ

The sentence handed down to Ralph Sherwin and his friends by Lord Chief Justice Wray:

“You must go to the place from whence you came, there to remain until you shall be drawn through the city of London upon hurdles to the place of execution, and there to be hanged and let down alive, your privy parts cut off and your entrails taken out and burned in your sight, then your heads to be cut off, your bodies divided into four parts to be disposed of at Her Majesty’s pleasure. And may God have mercy on your souls.”

Sherwin and Campion were names of two of the forms (classes) at my secondary school. I was in Clitheroe. There was also Fisher, Ward and More. Dunno if the school has them now...
