W. S. Gilbert

W S Gilbert (of '...and Sullivan' fame) jumped into a  lake with two young girls and died of heart failure, narrowly failing to fulfil one of his creation's (Colonel Fairfax) wishes to die in June in the process. He was 74.

Its now 5 years since I posted the 20th anniversary of the deaths of Ted Drake (82),

Ted Drake.jpg

scorer of 7 goals in one game for Arsenal against Aston Vila, plus the man who first took Chelsea to the League Championship,

and Bobby Stokes (44), scorer of one goal in an FA Cup final, 1976 for Southampton (1) against Manchester United (0).

Aw, Bobby Stokes!  I remember it well.

Some car manufacturer, can't remember which, promised a new car to any player who scored a hat-trick during the FA Cup Final.  When Bobby's goal turned out to be the only goal of the match, they decided to give him the car anyway.  Hilariously he was the only member of the team who couldn't drive.  The car was parked on the centre spot at The Dell and remained there for weeks.

Even then I had this irrational dislike of Manchester United, so  really enjoyed that goal.

That's the one.

Coincidentally, both comic strips debuted on the same day (March 12, 1951)!

Charles Kennedy - Wikipedia

5 Years Since Charles Kennedy went to the great commons bar in the sky to meet Alan Clark, Nick Scott, Iain Mills, Fiona Jones, and the many other boozey MPs we don't know about.

It seems like the cost of power is alcoholism.

Johann Strauss Jr (or II, or the younger, if you prefer) waltzed away 121 years ago today. He was 73.

Johann Strauss II by Fritz Luckhardt (cropped).jpg

He was the Strauss who wrote those tunes you know (apart from the Radetzky March, that was his dad). As he was known as 'The Waltz King', here's The Tritsch-Tratsch Polka.
