Hate to say it, but this is most likely lung cancer, at least stage 2.  Lafleur was known as a heavy smoker, even having a cigarette between periods. Being treated aggressively, obviously, so hope for the best.

Canadiens player Guy Lapointe, not to be confused with the aforementioned Guy Lafleur, has oral cancer.

Apparently located at a point on the tongue that makes it very easily treatable (well, for cancer), so probably not a good idea to include him in any lists for next year.

Hasn't hit Wikipedia yet, but there's another one gone over the last couple of days, upping the recent count to 4 players. He played 434 games in the NHL with 6 different teams - 5 of the Original 6 teams (apart from the Red Wings) and the expansion Minnesota North Stars. He was 89.

What's the idea behind adding -strong to someone's name when they're ill? Nobody does it in the UK.

After a surgery like that, you’d think they are feeling quite the opposite.

From my recollection, it stems from Boston Strong and it's been a thing ever since.

I think it was started by that fuckwad Lance Armstrong,  who started the Livestrong Foundation.  I would have thought that the practice would have fallen out of favor when it became clear how he had cheated for years and disgraced himself and his sport,  but I guess some things just stick.
