Davey Jones' Locker 1,325 Posted August 3, 2012 Does anyone know if the old Australian singer Sandy Scott is still alive? He seems to have vanished off the face of the planet and there is virtually no information about him anywhere online. The only clue is that he apparently married Col Joye`s sister years ago. After that, nothing...

Magere Hein 1,400 Posted August 7, 2012 Big death: Robert Hughes has gone. Indeed. I read his The Fatal Shore before and during my trip to Australia in 1998. Didn't know you came down here. Hope you enjoyed the experience. Our beer probably isn't as good as Dutch brews.... I was in Sydney in January and Februari 1998. For my work, but the workload was, due to preparation and skill, low. If it wasn't for a nasty little bug in a computer subsystem from a third party I could have finished after two days and toured Australia for six weeks. I arrived in Sydney on Thursday morning, after a 24 hour sleepless flight. My body wanted just one thing: sleep. I had to work the next morning, so actual sleep was a Bad Idea. So after I checked in at my hotel (a posh joint at Hyde Park) and had a shower and a clean shirt, I started a zombie-like walk through town, keeping awake. I wandered into The Rocks and the Lord Nelson Hotel. They brew (or brewed) a brilliant dogbolter, which kept me going well into the evening. I went to sleep at 11 (in my hotel!), was wide awake at 2 am, read a bit (The Fatal Shore, of course), fell asleep and was fine when the alarm clock sounded. The whole routine reset my biological clock, for I didn't have any jet lag untill after the flight back home. So in conclusion: give Fourecks and Fosters a miss, but other Australian beer is fine. I even learned to appreciate VB. regards, Hein

I even learned to appreciate VB. regards, Hein Yes, Australians don't actually drink Foster's. It is just a well-marketed export beer. Four X is brewed about 1.5 km from where I work and it is popular here but I think everyone recognises it is a very commercial beer. Boutique beers are starting to be appreciated more as Australian palates grow more sophisticated but the problem is cost. The same is true of imported beer. When I was travelling around Europe a few years ago, it was interesting to see how cheap a certain beer brand was in Prague or Berlin and the cost of the same beer in Australia. Didn't know you worked in IT. I do, too, on the Linux side of things.

Davey Jones' Locker 1,325 Posted August 17, 2012 BTW, for all of you Hinch-watchers, he was on television last night looking relatively healthy after his transplant. Still a little haggard and tired around the eyes but the best he has looked for years. It looks like all is going well for him, post-transplant.

Davey Jones' Locker 1,325 Posted November 2, 2012 Yet more quality contenders: Bart Cummings - born 1927 - most famous and successful horse trainer in Australian history. Nearly time for our annual check-up on Bart's health. Unbelievably, he still appears to be going strong and has entered a horse in this year's Cup. Go Bart go!
