Thatcher 2,470 Posted August 20, 2018 Turnbull called a spill and Dutton challenged. Turnbull won 48 to 35. Presume Dutton will now resign, although mustn't fill PM Turnbull with confidence to know 35 of his MPs no longer support his leadership. Edit: Dutton has resigned and will take to the back benches. Davey Jones' Locker 1,325 Posted August 21, 2018 Just reading about it now. (I am at the shops). Now there has been one challenge, there will be another at the next misstep if they think they have the numbers or if the polls continue to be bad. The election draws closer, though. Davey Jones' Locker 1,325 Posted August 23, 2018 I just looked up some stats... Since Lizzie became Queen, Britain has had 13 different people as PM and Australia has had 14. However, since 2008, Britain has had three changes of leadership and Australia has had five (about to be six).
Davey Jones' Locker 1,325 Posted August 23, 2018 From the ABC live blog: "You are watching live the long and painful death of the 29th Prime Minister of Australia politically. The rug has just been pulled from Malcolm Turnbull. Malcolm Turnbull will have to call a party room meeting after this news from his closest supporters. There will be a leadership spill, Peter Dutton will nominate for the leadership and he is expected to win. It is not clear whether the Coalition will still command the majority in the House of Representatives with a new leader. They currently have a one-seat majority. Nationals MP Kevin Hogan has said he would leave to sit on the crossbench if there's a leadership spill. Other Nationals have indicated they may do the same."
