October: Claude Levi Strauss (definitely a slow month for celebrity deaths)

November: Edward Woodward (only real celebrity death of that month)

December: Richard Todd (disappointing month so far)

This depends a lot on how you define 'most significant'. How significant was Ricardo Montalban's death to me? Completely insignificant in fact.

How significant worldwide? Probably not a lot more significant than it was to me.

Its also too parochial to narrow down; perhaps the only death this year that has had any worldwide significance is Michael Jackson, though maybe Ted Kennedy could be in with a shout.

No doubt Michael Jackson was not only the most significant death of the year, he was probably the most significant death of the decade.

December so far is a pretty lackadasical month in terms of celebrity deaths (especially compared to the last previous Decembers). So far, only Richard Todd and Gene Barry have died this past December and both were already in their early 90s. Then again, it seems like things have slowed down quite a bit since Patrick Swayze and Mary Travers died in mid-September.

Anyway, just as a thought. Say Tiger Woods did perish in that car crash. His death would've most likely eclipsed Michael Jackson's as both the most significant death of the year and of the decade. That's how much of an icon Tiger Woods is.

The media coverage would probably have been even more in depth had, say, Tiger Woods died in that car accident.

The media coverage has been far more interesting about Tiger than we hoped possible, all sparked off by that bizarre 'crash'...

Ild put down Sgt Pinback aka Dan O Bannon, writer of the Film Alien as most important for December so far.

Yeah because we all know who that is.... :evil2:

Seriously, I'd put Roy E. Disney as the most significant death of this month. And I think his death would be hard to top, unless someone like Elizabeth Taylor died.

I'd wager the most significant death of this month would be that of any hope of global political accord on concerted environmental action.

Go and have a bowl of lentil soup then stick those potato peelings in your composter.

That will make you feel better.

Well, Brittany Murphy died last December so I'd say that her death definitely tops Roy E. Disney's.

For January 2010, most significant death so far (by far) is J.D. Salinger. Awfully bloody slow start so far, but things seem to be picking up a bit w/ the passings of J.D. Salinger, Jean Simmons, Zelda Rubinstein, and Howard Zinn within the past week or two.

I wouldnt be suprised if you were masturbating when you typed that out, such is your desire for people to die.

Yes, it does sort of have the rythym of a guy close to orgasm doesn't it?

I think most of us who go to these sites feel that way. At least I'm a bit more frank about it.

Honestly, there are only certain celebs I desire to die, such as Fidel Castro, Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and others I won't name.

And honestly, I would be happy as heck if people like Dennis hopper can beat their diseases.

Why don't you start a bloody poll then. I for one do not feel that way, any wishful thinking deaths are just tongue in cheek. Are you just towing the party line with Fidel, you being an USAian and all that, or do you personally have grounds to see him shuffle off of his mortal coil?

I do feel your incessant drivel on significant deaths is a waste of your time. I'd hazard a guess most people ignore it (but would never assume most of the DL's readership feel this way). Not only is it dull but several of the names you string out are non-entity pelebrities that only you care about or are aware of from your collection of snuff/porn or whatever genre it is you harp on about.

Ah, that's better. Nothing like a bit of victimisation to combat the ennui.

So January 2010 J.D. Salinger was clearly the most significant death. We'll have to see how the rest of the year pans out.

Why do you think that the death of JD has more significance than the death of Jean Simmons??

Well, I'm not AIG, but Salinger had more cultural impact on a wider range of people for a wider range of time. Simmons' star shone brightly for about 10-15 years but at the time of her death, two generations had come and gone without recognising her name/face.

In addition, Salinger was a creator, whose work went on to inspire others, whereas much as I like films, Simmons was "just" an actress, and to be brutally fair, got where she did more through looks than talent.

You could even argue that in the UK, Bill McLaren had more impact on a wider range of people than Simmons did.
