Terminator 13 Posted January 5, 2011 Alireza Pahlavi | Son Of Shah Of Iran Commits Suicide Alireza Pahlavi committed suicide at his home in Boston, Massachusetts, a spokesman for the family of the former shah of Iran said Tuesday. Pahlavi, 44, was the son of former Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in 1979 and died the following year in exile in Cairo, Egypt. “It is with immense grief that we would like to inform our compatriots of the passing away of Prince Alireza Pahlavi,” the family website said. “Like millions of young Iranians, he too was deeply disturbed by all the ills fallen upon his beloved homeland, as well as carrying the burden of losing a father and a sister in his young life. Although he struggled for years to overcome his sorrow, he finally succumbed.” The family learned of the death Tuesday at 2:30 a.m., said spokesman Ahmad Oveyssi. Ironically, in June 2001, Pahlavi’s sister, Leila Pahlavi, also committed suicide.

He was played on TV by Damian Lewis. What a horrible day. Derek Gardner's death was bad enough, but Dick Winters was one of my heroes - a truly inspirational, courageous man, who was so humble and unassuming. He and all the men in his company will never be forgotten.

Phantom 2,536 Posted January 12, 2011 http://blogs.buffalonews.com/billboard/201...st-is-dead.html Former Buffalo Bills great running back Cookie Gilchrist died early today in an assisted living facility in Pittsburgh, his nephew, Thomas Gilchrist, confirmed this morning. Gilchrist had been in the hospital since September battling cancer, which had spread through his body. He was 75. Is this an old folks' home? not entirely. an assisted living facility is where they have their own apartment and have some degree of independence and have someone check in on them once or twice a day, but still have meals provided for them if they need to or they can cook their own. An old folks' home is where they are tended to 24 hours a day
Toast 16,156 Posted January 12, 2011 Ah. We in the UK usually refer to that as 'sheltered housing' or 'sheltered accommodation'. No doubt there is other jargon for it though. I always have difficulty with the word 'facility' when used to mean a building. I think of facilities as being things usually found inside buildings - not the building itself. Terminator 13 Posted January 12, 2011 Pakistani General who Created Taliban Dies from Liveleak.com..... Major General Naseerullah Babar, 82, the man credited with creating the Taliban, passed away due to protracted illness in a Peshawar hospital on Monday. A retired army officer who had trained in Dehra Dun, Babar served as Pakistan's interior minister during Benazir Bhutto's second term in government from 1993-1996. In 1996, he led the operation against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQ More..M) party in Karachi and arrested hundreds of activists on charges that they were involved in anti-state activities, including links with India. In the mid 90's, Babar as interior minister led a convoy of trucks into Afghanistan to open up trade in the country. He is also remembered for his singular support for the Taliban militia, although he retired from public life before the Taliban finally emerged as a force. He was suffering paralysis for last two and half years and was under treatment at Combined Military Hospital, Peshawar, where he died on Monday. He was buried in his ancestral graveyard in Pirpai, Nowshera. He is survived by wife and daughter. Born in 1928, Babar served in the Pakistan Army from 1948 to 1974 and joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the 1970s. He was considered to be extremely close to the late Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Babar's role in propping up and supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan was also pivotal. He made no bones about the fact that he was the father of the Taliban and commanded respect within the Taliban leadership. However, Babar looked at Taliban as a 'strategic and political ally', not an organisation he was ideologically connected to, and believed a Taliban government could help Pakistan strategically. In his twilight years, Babar distanced himself from the PPP over the issue of the controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance - of which he was a bitter critic - choosing to leave the party and formally end his political career.
