Toast 16,232 Posted April 14, 2012 The eve of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic seems a good time to consider the status of the cast of the 1958 film "A Night To Remember". Still thought by many to be the best Titanic film, it is packed with famous names and familiar faces, many uncredited. (I still haven't managed to spot Sean Connery, mind you.) Below, courtesy of IMDB, is the complete cast list (or so it says). I've attached year of death where applicable, and year of birth where no death is indicated. The latter are highlighted in red. Names in green are those for whom no dates are supplied by IMDB. Please note all the data is taken from IMDB and I have not cross-checked any of it, so there may be some errors. I have not included film crew, but note that all the principals (director, writers, producer) have departed.

Toast 16,232 Posted April 16, 2012 John Cairney, who played the young Irish bloke in steerage (and who turns out to be Scottish - never knew that!) has a website with loads of stuff on and includes an interesting video about filming ANTR This was filmed in 2010 and he seems in good form. He is 82 though ...
Bibliogryphon 9,645 Posted April 16, 2012 Begn watching 'A Night to Remember' either side of the last episode of ITVs Titanic yesterday and the question I had was why did ITV even bother. Four episodes of pretentious, cliched, class angst twaddle even with what on the surface (whoops) looked like a good cast. Whereas ANTR oozed class and an understanding of story telling. I'm not even going to bother with the metaphors. It would just be too easy.
YoungWillz 21,205 Posted August 25, 2015 Ran a quick check through IMDB since the list was posted above. According to that source: Grace Denbigh Russell died in 1969. Gerald Lawson died in 1973. Stuart Wagstaff died this year.
Toast 16,232 Posted August 25, 2015 Thanks, YW. I've edited the list accordingly. I did know about Stuart Wagstaff, as he became the first to score for my theme team "Nearer My God To Thee", which features people who have been in films about the Titanic. Thank you for the validation three years down the line but I still see that you are labouring under the misapprehension that Jenna Coleman is charming. That may be true if charming is actually a code word for annoying and talentless.

Predictor 1,018 Posted September 12, 2015 Do we really need an individual thread for every movie ever made? Besides, copy-pasting cast members from IMDb, including the uncredited ones (old lady, seaman, etc), is about as uncreative and uninteresting as it gets. Toast 16,232 Posted September 12, 2015 Do we really need an individual thread for every movie ever made? Besides, copy-pasting cast members from IMDb, including the uncredited ones (old lady, seaman, etc), is about as uncreative and uninteresting as it gets. No. But I thought this one merited a thread, because of the nature of its very large cast. Many actors who later became stars (or at least familiar faces) appeared in it, some as unnamed extras. It makes people go, "oh, look, xxxxx was in it!" And because it's still the best Titanic film ever made. Re copying the cast from IMDB, it seemed to be the most efficient way. I was not seeking to be "creative" or "interesting". Now fuck off.

Toast 16,232 Posted December 15, 2016 According to IMDB Jane Downs, who played Sylvia Lightoller, died in 2015, but I haven't found an obit. I would have expected her to get a mention somewhere, as besides her own acting credits she was the widow of Terence Alexander and ex-wife of Gerald Harper.
