For completion noting Ron Flowers death in here. While he didn’t play a minute in 1962 he played every single minute of England’s 1962 campaign and scored twice.

(Also reminds me that two other members of the 1962 England squad born in 1934 are still alive, They are Maurice Norman and Bryan Douglas. And that two members of the 1958 squad are still Alive at 90+. They are Tommy Banks and Colin McDonald).

Bryan Douglas still regularly attends matches at Ewood Park. He's in fair health for his age and former profession.

For completion, there are 5 English survivors from 1962: Bobby Charlton, Norman, Douglas, Alan Peacock and George Eastham.

1958 also has 5 - Charlton, Norman, Douglas and the aforementioned Banks and McDonald.

Last month, Horst Eckel, the last living 1954 champion, had hip surgery, which was then kept "secret" (i.e. not sold to every newspaper), now he's walking again. Franz Beckenbauer established contact with the specific clinic:

Definitely a previous DDP pick for OoO, and definitely a DDP pick for Sudden Death in 2021.

A lucky one, DDP wise,  as he was on my shortlist for the old folks DDP team only there wasn't space. Unlike other misses, someone else got him for the first time in years!

Aside from Cowie being a Dundee legend, he was also the last surviving player from the 1958 Scotland World Cup squad.

Therefore, Scotland are the first team from 1958 to have all their squad pass away.

Time marches on...

As I have remarked previously, the British footballers from the 50s and 60s have really not fared well compared to footballers from other countries. Any reasons why? Was a different football used in the UK that was heavier as dementia appears to be a big part of it.

Don't think so.

IMO it's more to do with lifestyle differences. Back then footballers in Britain used to smoke and drink a lot whilst they were still playing. When they retired from the game they'd continue down that path. A lot of notable UK players/managers have died from liver and lung problems, incl. cancers.

This behaviour continued up to the 1980s. My mum's first husband is a former professional player and manager (who will remain nameless) and I've seen the way him and his former colleagues live now, including their consumption. It's not at all commendable.

On the flip side to this, it's now the polar opposite in the UK. A lot of these guys don't drink or smoke at all now, and their diets are super healthy, as the standards and training are so demanding. I know two guys, one early 30s, the other 21, who are professional footballers in Scotland. They've never had a drop. Changed days. Ofc some players still have the odd blowout, which often makes the papers, but it's rare.

The 1966 England World Cup squad must be the unhealthiest winners ever. I can’t see any of them getting to the age Doug Cowie has died at.

At the point of writing, the BBC match report makes no mention of either the minute's silence held for Doug Cowie before the match, or indeed McPake's dedication of Dundee's win to his memory.

Yes, but STV do in their match report, and STV, like all the ITV regions, is a qualifying obit.

Excellent.

(read above in The Simpsons' Mr Burns voice).

One of the things we did (in 2020 even? I forget if it was for then or this year) was reverse TMIBs limits on ITV regional obits because it was unfair if folk got an obit in a major QO source but it was on the wrong page or only in the N Ireland or Scotland section.

Spade did the same in 2019 for the BBC regional pages after one pick got 5 different BBC obits, none of which were accepted in the rules!

I know. It's a good thing, now you've eliminated the vast majority of God's waiting room only cases.

I don't know whether to like Yahoo as a source. I guess I'd like it if one of my picks got a Yahoo only obit. But as that hasn't happened yet, I'll plump for hating it presently.

Dunno yet, none of my potential Yahoo obits have had any staying power!

If it turns out to be Pandoras Box next year I'm sure the new Cmme will work on it though.

I think it’s the only one that doesn’t have much of a British base or heritage.

Is there no Welsh newspaper that could be added like how the Daily Record is a source?

Or what about the website of GB News (through the amount of news they cover it would be very shocking if they were ever the sole Obit source)

Just an aside to confirm Jimmy Binning died in the 1990's - https://blantyreproject.com/2019/06/ian-jimmy-binning-footballer/ so Ian McMillan is the only surviving member of the squad, albeit he didn't travel.

Denis Law, now 81, is the oldest living Scot to have played World Cup Finals football (1974) and behind him it's Willie Morgan, now 77.
