I wonder how many England Players who played under Walter Winterbottom are left. Bryan Douglas and Colin McDonald from 1958 squad with Alan Peacock and George Eastham from the 1962 squad but surely they are others who didn’t go to a tournament.

Just 7 additional but note Eastham never played for Winterbottom. He made his debut for Ramsey in May 1963.

Blunstone

McGuiness

Holliday

McNeil

Crawford

O'Grady

Hinton

Sad news about Tommy Banks. Last England International who was born in the 1920's. Colin McDonald takes over the poisoned chalice now.

Eastham one of what was reasonably common in those days to go to a tournament uncapped then.. Of the other two who went to the 1962 World Cup uncapped Alan Peacock debuted during the World Cup but Jimmy Adamson never got a cap (Ted Burgin, Ken Green,  Harry Hooper in the 1954 squad and Maurice Setters in the 1958 squad (But he didn’t travel) the only others to be in a tournament squad and never get a cap.)

Apologies it's actually 8.

Ken Brown as well. So with McDonald, Peacock and Douglas, you can still field a team of Winterbottom players but no subs (as per the time I guess)

Bryan Douglas still attends Rovers matches at Ewood Park, and has walked onto the pitch on occasion in the last 12 months. No mean feat for a player of his era. Turned 90 last month.

Bosnian Franjo Vladic, who played for Yugoslavia at the 1974 WC, has died aged 73. He was an unused substitute in the competition.

He was also in the squad for the Euro 1976, this time playing Yugoslavia’s two whole games.

Bulgaria

22            FW          Georgi Nikolov        1 May 1931 (aged 31)

There seems to be a confusion on the identity of this player. He has no Bulgarian wiki so it's complicated. If you selected the 1937-born player from this page, it will direct you to Georgi Dimitrov who played in 1956 Olympics. What's contradicting is he only played for the national team until 1958. No reference linked in the wiki mentioned him being part of the 1962 squad. In the Polish and Hungarian wiki, there is a page for the player born in 1937 but never debuted for the national team.

The 1962 Bulgaria’s squad wiki page was also modified, Nikolov been replaced by Dimitrov in the roster.

Transfermarkt now also listed him as part of the squad. I'm still not convinced because there is no article that mentioned him being part of the 1962 squad. Only the 1974 squad when he was an assistant manager

Is this the first player from the 2014 WC to die?

Still synonymous with own goals in modern Italian football parlance, to the extent that if you put his name into YouTube you get a bunch of "autogol" compilations that don't mention him at all.

I've listed living footballers who played in 1970 World Cup. If a living player is missing, it means the player has played in a previous World Cup

El Salvador

Pipo Rodríguez
Jorge Vásquez
Juan Ramón Martínez
Salvador Cabezas
Ernesto Aparicio
Mario Monge
Tomás Pineda
Mauricio Manzano
David Cabrera
Genaro Sermeño
Jaime Portillo
Guillermo Castro
Gualberto Fernández

Juan Ramón Martinez has died aged 76.

On 8 October 1969, during a qualifying playoff against Haiti, he scored the only goal of the game, qualifying El Salvador for its first WC in 70.

During the latter, he played Salvador’s two first games as they were knocked out in the group stage.

He also participated in the 1968 Olympics, scoring Salvador’s first goal (out of 2) for its first and only participation to the Football Olympic tournament.
