And you break the news to me, YW! Poor chap though: glioblastoma and pancreatic cancers (with others)? That's just a shit hand altogether.

I'll break some more news, msc.

By my calculations, with just over 6 months to go, you have 11 hits.

Widow's Peak still hasn't had a hit. Could be on course for a record-breaking year again in so many ways!

Who was last year's champ -- and did they not enter this year?  According to your updated scoreboard I had the most points for a returning team (553) but I don't recall winning a DP.  Odd.

gc reptile won - the scores you are looking at are the comparable scores at the same stage of last year's competition.

You were second (well done) - see about page 18 of this thread.

I know it's 24/7 news these days, but there's no need to panic if an obit takes a day or two, people. Sky bloody acknowledged her health problems, she'll piss a QO within the week.

Well I'm starting to get a bit twitchy after two days :D

I don't think this is any good either as only states she died this week not the specific date? Might be good enough for Shaun's pool though.

Absolutely right GUN.

Still need a date of death to calculate points I'm afraid for Fawkes. Maybe she wanted news of her death not to be the news?

Someone somewhere is going to give you the points I'm sure.

Don't think I'm in the lead at the moment, but out of interest, what's the point difference between the top 5?

Ok, so I'm unwell so I have brought the leaderboard forward by 24 hours from when it is due, just in case I die before the end of the month or even the end of the day. (Actually, I'm hoping it was just a turn and nothing more serious, anyway, recuperating...)

In a couple of weeks we reach the tipping point of the year, so the next leaderboard will conclude the first half of the year.

Now off to see who's copped it while I've been posting the above!

Wait, so I'm still in the lead? I thought the Christie/Van Zandvliet one-two would've kicked me out of the top spot.

Nope you are essentially leading by your additional Wildcard points.

And those chasing you in the main still have their Wildcards to play.

Exciting, isn't it?

There's nothing worse than a Kohl'd Helmut on a summer day, unless you are Book, The Unknown Man and Rotten Ali who pick up points for the former German leader.

I'm holding off. Canada's oldest man and no main media coverage?

Right, I don't want to set a precedent here, Chessbase is a notoriously bad source.

However, I have seen surrounding information which back up the obit which does technically qualify, so I'm awarding ImNotHades the points for Sarosy.

Who'd have thought this one would have been so difficult?

Don't think there's been a source as awful as that yet, but rules are rules.

Are we sure he's actually dead though? Can't believe this hasn't been picked up by any other media.

There's an indication I think on the English Chess forum from a chap who was in close contact chess wise with the guy and who has confirmed he was telephoned by a relative to confirm his death.

I'm sure it's more a matter of time, but on that basis I'm awarding the points. They can always be taken away again you know, ages til December...

Right, so we enter the second half of 2017. Time for those with a surplus of potential hits to get those points to hurtle up the leaderboard.

Update on the Widow's Peak situation, there's 59 days to get a hit before equalling the record, and 60 days to get a hit before breaking it. I'm sure msc will be watching that with interest.

It also looks highly likely that the most hits record will be broken this year; msc needs 2 to equal it and 3 to break it and JoeyRuss and Sir Creep need 4 to equal it and 5 to break it.

It's too early to try and even work out if the points record would be broken.

Also YW can you let me know if a Joker score exceeds 363 points. Seen as it's getting towards late enough in the year for that to happen. (i.e from Monday).

Sure thing. It's all up in the air. I'm about 20 hits in September away from winning this thing!
