All of whom had some influence, great or small, on my childhood and teenage years.

Allan Arbus and Jon Finch. I know the latter died in 2012 but we didn't know until 2013 so he counts. I'm surprised no-one has said Bob Godfrey yet.

Bob Godfrey of course! Throw in Richard Briers as well while we're at it...

Avoided posting in this and the opposite thread (till now) because I have a habit of mistaking opposites, and knowing me I'd have said "the three Nazis come to mind" in this one by accident.

So I'll say most of the writers. Been a bit of a crap year for lit.

Richard Briers

Lou Reed

Mel Smith

are probably the ones who've made the biggest impact on my life in a non-political sense.

James Gandolfini was probably the most surprising death of the year. Ray Manzarek and Peter O'Toole will be missed, though I wasn't a major fan of either. Chrissy Amphlett, Jeff Hannemann. Bernie Nolan was one of the few Nolan sisters I've not seen in the flesh. And Kevin Ayers joins an ever-increasing list of people I've got into just before they died... he was so beautiful when he was young.

Notable deaths according to the BBC

That's a real tough one to watch, just seeing how many left us in the past year.

Tony Gubba for me, as I have a signed picture of him which I'm sure has virtually doubled in value.

Standard British sarcasm aside.... he was a decent and coherent commentator in a sea of utter wank and drivel that we have to listen to when we put the sports on.

I'm sure this is true, I'm not a huge football fan but do appreciate a good commentary, as my love of James Whitham and Jack Burnicle proves.

A little part of my memory will always have a place for Tony Gubba with Paul Canoville at Hillsborough in a common or garden League Cup tie in the mid-1980s...

Biggest honor Whicker got was an island named after him.

Just found out that a week ago someone posted the BBC tribute for Mel Smith on Youtube, in it's full length. I'm not British but NTNOCN was also broadcast in the Netherlands. So Smith is also well known to me. I saw this tribute first time around on TV. Nice to know you, who missed the opportunity, can watch it now as well. I'm not to ashamed to say I was a bit emotional as well. I miss the geezer...
