Nobody's died afaik, but this might be a better place to ask than the films thread.

Has anyone here seen Inland Empire?

I've acquired it on DVD.  I was pleased to see that there was an option for subtitles, because I often have trouble making out dialogue, either because of accents or poor diction (why do actors whisper so much?)

Anyway I settled down with the subtitles option enabled, and at first there were some subtitles - although I couldn't hear any dialogue!  But then, no more subtitles even though there was audible  dialogue.  I gather that the subtitles only function when people are not speaking English.

I haven't got very much further because the dialogue seems to be muffled and distorted. The scene where Grace Zabriskie visits Laura Dern - I could barely make out a word that was said.

Is it just me? If it's like that all the way through I will just have to give up on it.

Heh, well, I was wondering where the question would go. I think the movie is more a mood, or a feeling, than a "real" movie. At least, that's what I took away.

I can't remember if the dialogue bothered me, maybe it's meant to be somewhat inscrutable.

Yeah, this wasn't the usual poor diction,  mumbling and swallowing words, it actually sounded distorted and uneven.

I'll pick up where I left off and go on with it, but if I can't hear what people are saying, that'll be me out.  Which will be a pity.

I have the DVD being a big David Lynch fan, obvs, and I've watched it twice but like most of his films it takes a few watches before you start to get into the same mindset as Lynch and fully understand what he's trying to convey. Mulholland Drive was like that but after several watches I consider that a masterpiece.

IE is a  very long film at 3 hours and I'll need to set aside a time when I know I won't be distracted for next watch.

Hmmm. I've just found a bit of that scene on Youtube and it sounds much clearer.  Must be a fault with my copy.

If only there were subtitles !  Usually lacking on Lynch films for some reason.

If you're looking for more strangeness,  the full edition of Rabbits is on YouTube.  I showed it to my children when they were very small and they thought it was hilarious.

For the last few days a hunt has been going on for a macaque monkey which has escaped from Kincraig Wildlife Park and is roaming the Scottish Highlands. Once they capture it, which I hope they do soon, they should get David Lynch over to interrogate him. After all David has experience of this

Don Murray’s death surely worth a mention here. Had been retired for nearly 2 decades when he came out of retirement to star in the Twin Peaks revival in 2017.

Yes it didn't twig with me when I saw the name but he had a great role as Bushnell Mullins in Twin Peaks The Return

Lynch just posted something on Twitter for the first time in 1,5 years. Something will be coming to see and hear on June 5th. He sounds undiminished.

Most likely a new musical project.

No, there's something on IMDB listed as Upcoming.  Seems to be a 13 episode series currently titled 'Unrecorded Night'.

It was cancelled by Netflix some time ago, around 2 years.

Maybe he's not working with Netflix.

I guess that we'll find out soon enough.

Sacred Bones which is the music label that released his previous musical efforts are promoting it heavily, also Chrystia Bell's social network accounts.

I watched the 3rd season of Twin Peaks not too long ago, and it's actually a marvel that this one got made. It's pretty good, too, mostly.

But the actors were dying left and right. Between filming and release two died, Log lady and Miguel Ferrer. Harry Dean Stanton shortly after.

Lynch himself aged curiously well though. I'm totally amazed that he actually got it done 25 years after the end of season two, as predicted!

I had assumed that that was it anyway.

I kind of think that Ridley Scott should retire, too. Directors are among the people who cant quit, see also Francis Ford Coppola and Clint Eastwood.

I'd say that nobody needs a Gladiator II or a misguided Napoleon biography. I hear you, nobody forces me to watch them. But I kind of think it reflects back badly on the originals, like the later Indiana Jones movies. Sometimes things are better off being left alone, and Ridley Scott doesn't bring anything new to the table anymore.

I admit that's a bit elitist.

Lynch has just finished a collaborative album with Chrystabell who played FBI Agent Tammy Preston in Twin Peaks The Return.

It's called Cellophane Memories and is very experimental. dreamlike and almost other worldly, a very Lynchian experience listening to it.

They both did a youtube broadcast last Thursday with Lynch introducing each of the 10 tracks and after hearing all the tracks Chrystabell answered questions which had been posted on social media leading up to the broadcast.

The album was released last Friday, just waiting on my copy to arrive.

Anyway David looked really well and doesn't look like he wants to slow down on his creative work but his emphysema will make him pretty much housebound unfortunately.
