Deathrace 2016

Recommended Posts

Thanks to those of you who picked Schmidt for also picking subs; he's the first 'DNS due to death' on the masterlist

DNS? Did Not Survive?

Did Not Start - I think

Aye, indeed, DNS means did not start. Some - ahem - cunt had schimdt on a team and now has the #1 name on the subs bench replacing him. I'll take the top sub from the list to replace the premature topplers.

I was a daft sod who thought Geoffrey Robinson might be a potential unique at one point much earlier this year. That went well!

You're eager!

I think this could be a far tougher year to win though. With Death Impends rapid improvement year on year, DDT and Spade being DDT and Spade (if they play), and perhaps Sir Creep if you can entice him to play (his Shadow list this year had 7 hits by February, with smart picking he'd have crushed the field here)...

I was kinda lamenting that---as MY research goes for 2016---I keep asking 'where are all the Ahmad Givens's, King Abdullah's, Jules Bianchi's and Lauren Hill's of the world this year? I can't find hardly any, whereas we had no problem putting 10 gimmes on last year's lists. Where are they? And sure there may be a couple Joey Feeks out there but goddammit EVERYONE is going to have that name so we are all tied up. Ahmad Givens and Little Jimmy Dickens were a couple personal 'finds' and maybe I will find a couple that last few days of December (see: Dickens) but I doubt it.

Anyway I digress only to say I got out of the gates quickly this year but they were there for the picking. I don't see as much low-hanging fruit. I'm beginning to question my searching capabilities. All the good names seem to be dying which doesn't help.

SirC

PS I threw a couple names out there who weren't supposed to die yet (Jeff Golub, who suffered from same dastardly disease Dudley Moore succumbed to) and just caught lightning in a bottle when he dropped over January 1! He actually should've lived till this year according to averages. So there's always luck.

Sir Creep, your man with the cancer (Adam Something) from that band we spoke of a few weeks ago - no press at all in the UK so not going to be a DDP hit, but would probably be worth Deathrace points, I'm sure of it.

The month is also young, I can think of several "gimmes" who only appeared in the last half of December: Lou Rawls, Paul Goggins and Neil Young* to name but three.

*That's the championship winning deceased footballer and not the famous singer-songwriter, before any smart alecs reply.

Without giving away any of my own picks, Captain Chorizo's team there has at least five names I'd expect to see dead by March

Us yanks clearly at a disadvantage when it comes to having a clue who might obit as we approach 'fringeness' (new word). He may not obit even here, but Rolling Stone would give a mention and there's that.

I moved the DDP obit reply to the 2016 DDP thread to avoid clogging up MPFC' game. In terms of this game, nearly everyone obits.

In case you think I'm exaggerating, I won the 2015 version with the following people: Gery Leuliet, Isabel Rosado, Yutaka Katayama, Irving Kahn, Hans Erni and Roy Douglas. All of them qualified.

And in answer to - oooh - one question recently received I guarantee that anyone doubling their DDP team up here will have their picks protected until at least Jan 1st

Aye, too right.

We draw the line at accepting local graffiti as a qualifying obit

We want a carnival of carnage and a rapid fire result.
