Political Frailty

Recommended Posts

France's Minister of Health under Valery Giscard d'Estaing and later under Mitterrand, Simone Veil has died aged 89. She also served as President of the European Parliament from '79 to '82.

Few teams had her in the DDP.

Since she was almost 90, she should have been on my list. But this politician and woman was one of the few people you COULDN'T see as dead. She was a kind of legend. What she did, what came through was EXTRAORDINARY. She was a major feminist, an icon for many women in France.

Nick Boles on his recovery and possible comeback:

Actually, I believe he may be a bit premature. I think he's forcing it too much.

He's standing to be Chair of the Education Select Committee.

The health update is he feels well enough to be considered Chair of the Education Select Committee.

Alberto Fujimori has been hospitalised with spinal problems.

The article also lists some of his numerous hospital stays from the past few months.

"He was admitted in December with a cyst on his pancreas and in September due to gastric problems and high blood pressure."

"He is suffering more and more illnesses," the doctor said. "He has been operated on several times for cancer of the tongue and now he has problems with his lower back."

Also, he looks dreadful in that photo.

A Peru leader is consulting doctors on Fujimori's medical pardon.

I give in it burned not knowing.

Of the 81 MEPs elected to UK constituencies in 1979, 26 have died but of the remaining 55 there are a small number who I cannot determine if they are alive or dead (from my preliminary search). They are:

  • Richard Cottrell
  • Alfred Lomas
  • Ben Patterson
  • Andrew Pearce
  • Barry Seal (Alive I think)
  • Alexander Sherlock
  • Richard Simmonds
  • Alan Tyrrell

The oldest surviving is Leicestershire MEP Frederick Tuckman (b.1922)

Well, well, well.

Death Notice for the aforesaid Tory MEP Frederick Tuckman who has died aged 95. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/thetimes-uk/obituary.aspx?n=frederick-tuckman-obe&pid=186048722

Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Tuckman

Who is oldest now? Is it Henry Plumb (b. March 1925)?

Her second fight with primary cancer. I assume that means the cancer is at an early stage.

Laura Kuenssberg - BBC political commentator has found herself in need of bodyguard protection of late: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4694590/How-BBC-s-Laura-Kuenssberg-given-bodyguard.html

Another part of the BBC where seemingly every element of the political spectrum seems to think the person is personally biased against them!

So either they're not, or they're biased against shit politicians...

Since they have able journos capable of asking searching questions they're probably biased against shit politicians by default.

Making them worth the licence fee IMHO

Yeah, I like Andrew Neil. He hates everyone. Also, while Paxman used to start at roaring level, and thus politicians were on guard, Neil has a habit of casually walking the politco into the verbal trap and then slamming it shut. Much more fun.

Hmm

Not a huge Andrew Neil fan myself because I always found him ponderous - might watch one right the way through in the light of the comments above.

I used to think he was highly biased, but then I twigged he just hates everyone, and it became much more enjoyable. There was an interview with a UKIP hopeful last year which was a joy in the car crash sense of the word.

He does indeed hate pretty much everyone and would not hesitate to trip anyone on any side up so they look a total twat.Neil and Jeremy Vine are the only two BBC political reporters I can stand.
