Only Famous For Being Ill And Dying

Recommended Posts

A minor version of Vicky Phelan, Lynsey Bennett, has died from her cancer:

https://www.sundayworld.com/news/irish-news/tributes-as-cervical-check-campaigner-lynsey-bennett-34-passes-away-after-cancer-battle/299578755.html

Another victim of the Cervical Check scandal in which cancer checks systematically failed to diagnose cervical cancer in women. I think she was a DDP pick at some point, but disqualified since then as not being notable enough.

Edit: No, not a DDP pick at least in the years 2019-2022. Well, I had her on my longlist though.

Natalie Fornasier, the very, very, very marginal writer, basically only notable as a cancer blogger, has died:

https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/health-wellbeing/aussie-writer-natalie-fornasier-dies-at-28-after-losing-terminal-cancer-battle-c-9595384

Fornasier ended up getting QO's from The Mirror, Yahoo and the Daily Mail https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11690577/amp/Sydney-writer-Natalie-Fornasier-dies-battle-melanoma.html

Reason I say this is not to bitch about disqualification but that it's clear the influencer/blogger type is virtually a shoe-in for obits, especially if young.

Unfortunately for DDP purposes, she wasn't as influential as required.

She looks like nearing end of journey maybe and 37 is no age still but feels like a success when she got diagnosed 14 years ago.

I wonder if her CoppaFeel charity work would make her an allowable pick in the DDP? i.e. one of that category of people who is only famous for being ill until they live long enough and do enough charity work to be also recognised through a charity/fundraising/campaigning?

She's on the DDP.

I agree, I think she's on the one way ticket, valid for six months.

Ah well that probably answers that one then.

I say probably because I can’t remember ever discussing her during my time on committee and as she would not be a new name we may never have even considered.

Iirc me and @gcreptile and you (?) decided her fame passed the threshold. She did present a BBC documentary after all.

Probably the last living "original" person of the kind of people this thread might have been created for.

She did it long enough and relevant enough though to qualify, imo.

Aye, just checking hereabouts - first mentioned on DL 11 Oct 2009 and a pick in the 2010 Deathrace, respect for her making 37

Haha - I can't remember what I had for lunch but I couldn't go back and look at the conversation either as I had left it.

Cheers

Heh same about the conversation details (no longer being in the cmme) but I recall her name coming up probably because she was a DDP regular already.

I was wondering why she wasn't on more teams after that living funeral...but I'll take it.

Probably because she lasted so long, much longer than everybody thought. Good for her, but still too early though.

She probably was the last living example of the OG cancer celebrities.

Don't recall if she was the longest continuously picked non-royal "celeb" on the DDP. In a fight to the death with Richard O'Sullivan?

There's the stat for most picked celebs overall.

Keef and Holly Johnson's total means that they're picked on every DDP where records are known (ie every game from 2000 onward + 1998).

Holly Johnson, Keith Richards 26
Hulk Hogan, Liza Minnelli 25
John Astin, Michael Barrymore, Jimmy Carter, Queen Elizabeth II (d. 2022), Mikhail Gorbachev (d. 2022), Imelda Marcos, Rupert Murdoch, Mike Tyson 24
Woody Allen, Michael J. Fox, Angela Lansbury (d. 2022), Desmond Tutu (d. 2021) 23
Emperor Akihito of Japan, George W. Bush, Kirk Douglas (d. 2020), Henry Kissinger (d. 2023), Ozzy Osbourne, Prince Philip (d. 2021) 22

Australian sergeant Emily Lahey has terminal cancer and offers her remaining time to strangers as a performance art project:

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/article/2024/aug/20/emily-lahey-time-to-live-project-terminal-cancer

She also seems to be an Invictus games veteran, if I understand this right. So maybe she'll meet Prince Harry soon:

https://invictusaustralia.org/team/emily-lahey/

Still, not really famous.

She's apparently only alive because she got treatment in the US. Makes me happy I don't have to worry about that, as I live here. Might go bankrupt getting healthcare, but I don't have to worry about getting approval and weighing deterioration versus care as it seems she did. Not a knock on Australia's healthcare system, which seems fine enough, but just an observation.

She looks relatively fine though, but the article doesn't don't have enough detail for me to be able to say how long she lasts.

Tayt Andersen, aka "Ellen DeGeneres' boyfriend" for being frequently on her show, has difficult bladder cancer:

https://m.imdb.com/news/ni64869655/?ref_=tt_nwr_1

He was on the show for needing a heart transplant. Through the show, he got it, but he's immuno-compromised and the outlook isn't good.
