gcreptile 10,972 Posted January 15, 2017 I didn't want to pick any people aged 70+ for my main team except for those who surely would have made the Drop 40, i.e. Glen Campbell. Now I know that I should have picked Peter Skellern and Jimmy Snuka over Sara Coward and Catherine Nevin. Tough calls... The Drop 40 bonus will change the game immensely next year. Unique pick hunting is becoming a weak strategy.
Joey Russ 7,227 Posted January 15, 2017 I didn't trust Snuka, but I think the vast majority of contenders think he was frauding, which was a mistake.
msc 18,466 Posted January 15, 2017 Oh I thought Snuka was fucked, but I never even remotely considered the possibility of him being on the Drop 40, so dropped him to go for another 60 year old!

Unique pick hunting is becoming a weak strategy. It's interesting to think of how much the points arms race has evolved in the past couple of years. As recently as 2015, Spade managed to win in part due to correctly guessing a centenarian death (as though Sadhana pushed him over the edge, the margin was so close he'd have lost without Grace Lee Boggs). Yet now we're at the point where even considering 60-somethings with no potential for bonuses is debatable.
YoungWillz 21,044 Posted January 19, 2017 K!eran M@xwell - "Inspiring" Olympic torch carrier from four years ago who has taken a turn for the worse in recent months, nowhere near guaranteed an obit though Sonja Durham - This may be the one I regret dropping most, Lady Gaga's bestie, stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, Gaga's even got a song about her on her latest album... I'm almost certain I'll curse dropping her Keith Welch, Les Mutrie - Footballers who may well fall victim to the "no BBC local report" rulings Miguel Ferrer - The big "rumour" pick this year other than Eddie Long, but I can't risk a pick based on Twitter gossip and nothing higher up Alan Chamberlain - Probably the most famous snooker referee with a penis left now Len Ganley's gone. Has suddenly stepped down from all positions he holds in the game and there were a few "didn't know he was that ill" comments from the snooker community around there. Mort Drucker - Mad Magazine artist apparently fully on the way out Death of Miguel Ferrer reported here: http://deadline.com/2017/01/miguel-ferrer-dead-ncis-los-angeles-crossing-jordan-1201890002/

I had him under consideration, too... but the rumours could mean everything and nothing.
Death Impends 7,975 Posted January 19, 2017 Yeah, those rumors appeared aplenty during my routine searches but I never really considered him for my DDP. I could've sworn that similar rumors about him being very poorly cropped up a few years back... Kind of similar to part of why I decided against Mike Ilitch, who will probably be a goner now with the way rumor picks have ended up this year.

YoungWillz 21,044 Posted January 21, 2017 Larry Pickering - His doctors said he wouldn't see 2017, but he's still posting the same shite on his blog Greg Gilbert/Stefan Karl Stefansson - I think they'll see 2018 Nobby Stiles - I don't trust his son PC Paul Briggs - Not my kind of pick Jessi Zazu - Don't think she'll obit Colin Meads - Might see 2018 and even if he does die, he probably won't benefit from the Drop 40 bonus. Anna Holmlund - I think she'll recover Pete Frates/Steve Gleason/Fernando Ricksen - Limiting myself to one ALS pick Jimmy Snuka - Don't trust him But Briggs dead: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/brain-damaged-cop-paul-briggs-9666734

msc 18,466 Posted January 21, 2017 Can't believe I had a family member die this year before a team pick. Sorry to hear that, Spade. Meanwhile, me, msc, and gcreptile are still waiting for their first hit... It's a marathon, not a sprint. Remember Spade was 50 points (give or take) behind the league leaders at one point in 2013, and Tonight, Matthew were 40 points behind Heaven Knows They're Miserable Now by end of January 2009 - on 31st December, Matthew was the champ, and HKTMN not even in the top three...
Death Impends 7,975 Posted January 21, 2017 I wonder if that puts me at joint lead? Checks... No, one team (This Mortal Coil) had him, Snuka, and Soares. So they're probably the provisional leader with 25 points. Sad case, though. I hope his family find peace.

Death Impends 7,975 Posted February 11, 2017 Mike Ilitch - Detroit sports bigwig, Little Caesar's Pizza founder. Rumors he was near death (rest in pizza pizza?) cropped up in mid-year, but I caught on to the fact that the journo claiming he was dying did so for at least three years! That, and Sir Creep posted him in that Detroit theme team, so the main reason I was considering him (offhand unique chance) was gone anyway. Another rumor name that turned out to be legit - Ilitch indeed rests in pizza pizza. No regrets dropping him, mind - I think I can be excused for not having the foresight to discern Creep didn't properly enter his theme teams!

When I alluded to "you've lasted quite long, lucky or fraud?" in the shortlist thread I was thinking mainly of him. He still ended up on the subs bench, but reeks of fraud nonetheless. But terminally ill Pickering – told by doctors it’s a matter of when not if his cancer returns – is refusing to go to the grave quietly, saying he’d knock Roberts out and couldn’t give a stuff about court action. “I’m saying what I think, if you don’t like it, screw you,” Pickering said. and ON HIS DOCTORS They removed one of his lungs last year and predicted in August he would be dead from cancer within three months. He refused chemotherapy and says now he’s offending them by still breathing and putting on weight. “They are angry I’m still alive … because it makes them wrong. I kept getting into blues at hospital with the surgeon who was going to be cutting me open and I thought to myself ‘I probably shouldn’t argue with this bloke – shut up, Pickering!’.”
Death Impends 7,975 Posted March 18, 2017 Definitely glad I went long on the prick - tbh I'll maintain that view even if he does die, as he'd be only worth 7 points anyway if I did go for him.

He is a unique pick for my team, so if he does die at some point during the year, he would be worth 10 points for me. Which is the equivalent of a non-unique pick aged 30-49. Of course, being the insufferable twat that he is, he'll probably deprive me of such a deadpooling joy.
