The 69 - 71 Club

I know this phrase was mentioned by Weebl and a couple of others a few times in the past, so I decided to do some research and see which minor and major figures in music has fallen at this age period. And the answer is actually quite a lot. And for the big names, it's not people who have fallen this decade, as the major deaths has even gone back as far as the 70's and 80's with the deaths of Louis Armstrong, Muddy Waters, and Buddy Rich. And the musicians who aren't as well known are, for a lot of them, truly great musicians. So I present to you all the musicians, according to Wikipedia, who have died in this time period since the 1950's, and potentially discuss which musicians could fall victim of this curse in the future. So here we go, in the order of name, bands they worked with (or if not a person we hear on records, occupation), age of death, and date of death (there's a ton):

Oh, this was solely music related. None of those would count (though I'll double check on a couple of them).

Oops. I guess Sara Coward wouldn't count either.

Ok, Inman will count, as he was a singer. The others aren't musicians.

Its so strange for old people to die.

Don't see the need for this. The number you've found easily shows this is a common age for musicians to die, and it's not that young for members of the general population.

The 27 club is different because it's young for musicians and general public.

I think it's less the amount of musicians that die and more the amount of quality musicians that die in this time period. It's just a thought by me.

It's a good list. Now you'd have to compare the number of deaths in this age range with the number of deaths in the average range of life expectancy, say, a list of musicians that died at ages 76-78. Maybe there's an anomaly there.

Though I guess, to be perfectly comparable, you'd have to wait 7 years until those that are 69-71 years old now, are 76-78 years old.

Full marks for including Lonnie Donegan on a list of very famous and/or highly talented musicians, imo.

Poor Lonnie. Highly important in British music history, even if he comes across as dated now.

True story. He died of a heart attack while preparing to take part on a George Harrison memorial gig.

The 69 number is like 27 and 36, at least to me. It's very much related to death for some reason. At least it's the only OCD-ish number out there. Wiki death page always has a lot of deaths at 69. Probably related to baby boom or something and 69 is not that old. It is if you're 14 but most of us here are not. If you retire at 65 then you expect to live at least 15 more years. Notable non musicians in 69 club - Theda Bara, Rosalind Russell, Desi Arnaz and Alan Rickman. I expect Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Richard Dreyfuss, Kathy Bates, Ozzy Osbourne or Gerard Depardieu to join the club soon.

Apart from maybe Robert Plant, I don't think anyone would ever be a bigger name than Bowie for the biggest name on the last, as all the others who would be bigger than him have either passed this age period or have already died earlier.

I'll take your Bowie and raise you an Barry Gibb (1.9.46).  Most successful British Record Producer of all time, outside of all the Bee Gees stuff and the songs written/produced for other artists

And I cannot believe Luciano Pavarotti was not noted!

Bonner was on the list (above Reg Presley of The Troggs), but with so many names, your bound to miss someone. Pavarotti is an embarrassing miss though.

Ouch! These omissions hurt....

Yves Montand

Ok, this one is a bit long gone but nonetheless fits the criteria.

Richard Wagner

Found some more.     (I have no life....)

Butch Trucks Greg Allman's drummer who died earlier this year.

Nicolas Caldwell, Founding member of the Whispers.

Jack Ely, Lead singer of the Kingsmen.

Jerry Reed Country singer

Sacha Distel French crooner

Frank Wilson Motown producer

Freddie Fender Tex-Mex legend

Jacky Lomax

John Holt Reggae pioneer

Ian McLagan Keyboardist of the Faces, Small Faces

Ken Brown Quarrymen, Beatles

Jim McCann Dubliners

Tony Bellamy Redbone

Henri Mancini Composer film music

I know for a fact Butch Trucks, Jack Ely, and Ian McLagan were already on the list. Let me double check if I've already gotten anyone else you've mentioned.

On Wagner, I did say after 1950, so that's why I missed him. And Tony Bellamy died at 63, so I won't be adding him for obvious reasons. :P
