This singer-songwriter only had 2 UK top ten hits - one of which was ironically a cover version (of an album track by one of the top 3 most successful bands ever). This act's biggest hit made the top 5, but  was subsequently an even bigger hit in a parody version by someone else. Another of their compositions was a minor hit for a UK MOR group that had a couple of number ones during a chart career lasting several years. Name the singer-songwriter and their biggest UK hit.

I hadn't forgotten about this.  Had  a few ideas but they all fell down somewhere.  Still mulling it over.

Immediately thought Joan Baez, then found out she's not had a UK top 5 hit single.

I got there in the end.  It's Melanie.
The cover was 'Ruby Tuesday', and the top 5 hit was 'Brand New Key' - a no. 1 in 1976 for The Wurzels as 'Combine Harvester'.  Ooh arr.

Well done you, if correct. I was thinking along the lines of country.

I never understood that Brand New Key song.  Roller skates is something I never had.  What's the key for?

Having considered it carefully, with the Freudian possibility of sexual innuendo (lock and key) I came to the conclusion: she was looking for a word that rhymed with 'me'.

Yes, well done Toast, you win. The other hit was indeed the Stones' Ruby Tuesday and the successful British MOR band with two number ones that also had a minor hot with one of her songs was the New Seekers with 'Look what they've done to my song, Ma'.

Ah, The New Seekers

A timely reminder they ever existed. According to the Wiki page only one of their classic chart-topping line up is dead; the others are aged between 70 and 76 and all likely obitable: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_Seekers

TV cartoon theme song which was a UK top ten hit nearly 50 years ago.

Not as big a hit as The Wombling Song, obviously.

1970s.  This song contains in its lyrics the title of the song that succeeded it at No 1 in the UK chart.

Between them the two songs occupied the No 1 spot for a run of 11 weeks.

Brilliant question Toast. Can you narrow it down a bit? The year?

This song became more successful on subsequent release than the original. There being a gap of 21 and a bit years when the song first hit the UK top ten, the original artist appeared as a featured artist on the same song when it became a duet and hit #1. The original and then featured artist is dead, the other artist on the #1 version was part of a more famous duo.

Plenty of info there.
