Just tested my theory on the Who link being dubious. Mike Wakelin was born in Essex in 1941 as Michael A Wakelin. He doesn't show up in the GRO up to 2021, isn't in the Probates after that, and according to 192.com, was alive as recently as 2020. Looking like he's still around, so Hoather probably isn't the only surviving member, hence the odd wording in the link.

I'm pretty certain it's just the 2 members that are deceased then (Potter and Cresswell).

I'll take your word for it, as I can't see that page.

 

The possibilities of these guys having gone abroad (sounds like most of them) and then dying off radar just went up! Shame they are relatively forgotten about. I wonder if the Who site meant to say "the surviving drummer"? "The" is, as they say, the definite article, if he meant to say that other band members were alive, I'd expect him to say "a surviving member".

Johnny Gordon seems to have at some point resided at Denmead in Hampshire and died around 2000/2001 from cancer. It's the first comment and the replies from an Ian Hurley. That might be of some help, @Ulitzer95?

Thanks for both of these YW! I think he's the John Gordon who was born in 1936 and died in 2001 in Portsmouth in the GRO Index but there are a few other possibilities and I can't be sure so I've just marked him as deceased and put "c. 2001". Not finding much else on Google or Ancestry.

NB: A challenging lineup to get your head round. Eddy used a variety of performers to record many of his earlier hits – some were session musicians, some could be considered members of the Rebels. Using the single credits on Rate Your Music, I've managed to list what will be most of their members on these hits.
N2: Changed name from Buddy Wheller to Buddy Wheeler as the former is a spelling error originating from a Decca release in 1958.

Jim Horn, 83, becomes the last surviving member of the Rebels. Duane was the longest lived so far.

Did some searching and found it interesting that she directly succeeded fellow centenarian Janis Paige as the title character in Broadway's Mame. Angela Lansbury originated the role and Celeste Holm also portrayed her, so although Ann Miller "only" reached 80 taking the character on Broadway seems a good omen for lasting a long time!

NB: Can't find a lineup for this group at the time of their hit, so I've listed all their members during this period as per their Wiki page. Given that Jimmy James and the Vagabonds was often an eight or a nine piece at this time, the list above may only be slightly off. I've considered that Count Prince Miller may not have appeared on the record as he was normally used during live performances to warm up the crowds and provide additional vocals.
NB2: Just found this page and it shows that I'm pretty far off an accurate lineup. I've kept the lineup above for now because, in the absence of anything more substantial, they seem to be the best known members of the band from that period.

Just found death info for 2 further members listed above. Colston Chen died in Ontario, Canada in April 2018 (a few years before his more famous cousin Phil). Rupert Balgobin died in 2021 in London.

Chen had a memorial online and Balgobin is in the GRO. Was able to verify they're the correct people using Facebook posts.

The other 5 members – Fredericks, Griffiths, Regis, Sutton and Wilson – are almost impossible to trace, but I'm going to guess most if not all of them are dead. Art Regis, who played the organ (and later played keyboards in other groups) should be easier to trace but he's not. I don't know if I'm missing something. All I can see is he contributed to a site online over 10 years ago when someone reached out to him for info.

 @Roy Hoather, I’d be delighted to edit any posts which contain erroneous details, as I’m sure @YoungWillz would, but as I suggested elsewhere, I strongly suggest you get in touch with thewho.info, as they have described you as “the surviving member”. Their publishing and careless wording has led to misinterpretation – not the fault of any of the members on here.

 

Secondly, can you confirm if the above obituary belongs to Curt Cresswell or not? The Magic Potion site here says that Cresswell was born in July 1947. The Curtis Cresswell in the above obit was from Essex and was aged 71 when he died in 2018. Given his unusual name, and the matching details, I hope you can understand why this was interpreted to be an obit for the Naturals member.
